According to Matt Bellamy, 'World War Z' is the band's favourite film to have created a soundtrack for.

ContactMusic
The Muse frontman is thrilled to have recorded the music for Brad Pitt's apocalyptic film and was inspired by the ''bleak'' scenario storyline while penning the tracks for the record, returning to the original book by Max Brooks as a reference point.
Speaking to Absolute Radio from the red carpet of the movie's premiere in London yesterday (02.06.13), Matt said: ''We've done our music in films a few times but this is definitely like my favourite one I've seen so far, you know our music's been used in the film. I was reading 'World War Z' when I made the album - and I loved it - it had an influence.

''Songs like 'Survival', like 'Isolated System' - I was thinking about this kind of insane survival situation - this real bleak kind of apocalyptic scenario when I was making the album - which I tend to do anyway when I'm making albums! So it's a really great fit, it's a lovely film. Well maybe lovely's not the right word - it's a real like thrill ride, total edge of your seat - got some real scary moments.''

Matt and the rest of the band, Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme - were sure the feature would be a success since the beginning and made sure to keep in touch with the filmmakers from the early stages of production to ensure the overall piece was a ''real collaboration''.

He added: ''This is probably the biggest film we've ever done - like right from the bat we knew this was a big thing because they kept contacting us when we were making the album saying they wanted us to score the film, but we weren't available to score the film, so we stayed in touch with them and they invited me and Dom to go and see like early cuts of the film and we saw some like really crazy chaos stuff.
''I had no idea how films were made - what I saw I couldn't make sense of it and we came back and saw it again as they were editing it up and all the special effects were going in. So it was a real collaboration from the beginning to the end of this film so really glad we got the song in!''

A few weeks ago we asked you for any questions you might like to ask the band. With just one day to go until they embark on their largest stadium tour to date, we're happy to publish a selection of their answers. Keep an eye out in the tour programme for the rest .

Many thanks to those of you that submitted questions, and to the folks at Brontone for giving us the opportunity.

MATT

There's a lot of debate surrounding the lyrics to Madness. Is it 'I need YOUR love' or 'I need TO love'?

- I need your love.

What did you write on the orange during the making of T2L?

- Probably something encouraging Dom to dig a little bit deeper to get that hi hat sound just right. He needs a little motivation occasionally.

Gigwise
The lead singer has admitted that being onstage makes him feel as though he doesn't have to restrain himself as he would in everyday life.

Bellamy told Classic Rock magazine: "If anything, you're more honest onstage. Up there, the true self comes out. The socialisation levels we use to modify our behaviour for everyday life can peel away."

"It's only in everyday life where you have to put on the jacket, the mask."

Bellamy also explained that he and his Muse bandmates were known to smash the odd instrument in their early years. Even if it was just for 'cathartic' reasons.

He continued: "In our early years I was genuinely a bit more... I wouldn't say angry, but I was definitely prone to 'anger moments'. I would explode. On those early tours it was a cathartic experience for us. The gear-trashing was the real thing."

Muse will be embarking on a huge European tour in May as they look to cement their status as one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

Although they have grown out of the 'gear-trashing', Bellamy will be looking forward to expressing himself onstage.

He said: "I like to think that when I go to see other artists I'm seeing what's going on deep down inside of them. You get a sense of freedom to express yourself any way you want to. You can say anything you want to, do anything you want, behave as you want."

In a recent interview with KROQ, Matt Bellamy reveals how the band received a phone call from Elton John, requesting a song for the Olympics.

KROQ
In the midst of recording The 2nd Law, the band’s 6th studio album, Muse received a phone call that would change the course of their album’s release and deliver an audience of over a billion.

Frontman Matt Bellamy explains his elation when learning that his song was adopted by the London 2012 Olympics. In a chat with KROQ-FM Los Angeles’ Stryker, he describes the amazement the band shares having penned the official Olympics theme. “It’s great to be a part of it. It’s such an exciting time for London. London’s been building up to this for like ten years. Patriotism isn’t really a big thing in England but I think this Olympics has brought it back a little bit.”

More than just part of a montage, “Survival” was chosen as the official theme of the London Olympics. But how and why was the song chosen?

Bellamy describes a surprising phone call from a fellow English artist. “Well actually, believe it or not, Elton John gave us a call and wanted to write a song for the Olympics. At one time Elton John was actually the director of the music for the Olympics. He contacted us and we thought ‘This is far out! We’re going to do a song for the Olympics with Elton John?!’”

“So that’s how the ball started rolling way back over a year ago,” continues Bellamy. “But then he pulled out of the Olympics. He didn’t want to be involved anymore cause he fell out with the organizers so that left us with a half-baked idea. At that point we just let it go and carried on with making the album. And then the Olympics approached us again about the ending ceremony for us to play and that’s when we played them that song ["Survival"] and they said they loved it and wanted to make it an official song of some kind.”

According to officials, the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games “will be titled ‘A Symphony of British Music,’ to celebrate the fact that music has been one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports over the last 50 years. The worldwide broadcast of the Ceremony will start Sunday, August 12th at 9PM GMT (check local listings) and feature more than 4,100 performers, including 3,500 adult volunteers and 380 schoolchildren from the six east London Host Boroughs.”
