Ok so lets get the first fact across, Opeth are a swedish death metal band! (yes suurely the stuff thousands of jokes are made of) but do not be so quick to judge. If anyone is looking for an absolutely genius prog-metal album there is no choice other than Ghost Reveries. Opeth can produce some of the finest metal and some of the most tender and beautiful acoustic/electronic music I think its criminal that they are not mentioned more on this forum! Another reason for posting this topic is that I believe Opeth have been seriously influenced by Muse when recording their latest album (Ghost Reveries). What do you guys think of this truely inspired band?

I love them myself, but unfortunately most people cannot see past the fact that they're categorised as "death metal" or have some growling vocals, to see the beautiful and unique music they create with their talented musicianship. That's humanity, I suppose .

If you do like Opeth and Muse, then I suggest Porcupine Tree. Although all three bands have a vastly different sound, I guess they do share some features such as their variety and experimentation. Steven Wilson, the mastermind behind Porcupine Tree, assisted Opeth with producing, as well as back-up guitars and vocals in Still Life.

Here's a good quote from Wikipedia about Opeth if anyone is unfamiliar with them:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opeth
Opeth adds several lighter elements to their music with acoustic guitar interludes, clean vocals, and influences from jazz, '70s progressive rock and blues on top of a fast, churning death metal-esque sound. Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt performs both clean singing and death vocals. Due to the addition of melodic and progressive elements, they are said not to conform to death metal, or any other specific genre.

There's actually another Opeth thread.

I have two of their songs, Harvest and The Drapery Falls and I like them alot!

I also have In Absentia by Porcupine Tree and it's starting to grow on me which is cool. I also have the song Deadwing which I love.

Yay for Opeth and Porcupine Tree!

With both bands, the more I listen to their albums the more I like them. I thought PT were too mellow at the start and Opeth were too brutal (at times), but that's all changed now .

Well from what I've heard, Ghost Reveries is one of their better ones, and that's why I got it first (and it is really good ). Out of the other songs I've heard, it looks like Blackwater Park could be another really good album (it has The Drapery Falls and Harvest on it).

It was released in 2003 has a sort of grainy picture of a lake on the front and i would say that its proabably their most diverse album. the song 'to bid you farewell is their best ever song. no competition!' Morningrise only haas six tracks but i would SERIOUSLY advise you to download it or buy it second hand from amazon

Opeth are soooo cool. But soooo random. Lots of people confuse them with Otep for some reason but thats just waaaaay different.

I'm probably going to try out Agalloch, as they seem pretty good. What are Otep like? They have female vocals, right?
