Likely winners, right now, only Precious, The Hurt Locker and Up In The Air. No nominations have been announced, but those 3 will be there for sure and are the favorites, Hurt Locker being the number 1 right now. We may have Avatar in the game, but that will probably mainly win techs. We also have Inglourious Basterds, but highly unlikely to win.

Haven't seen avatar yet but i kinda hope it does not win. $$$ and effects should not win best picture.
Up in the Air was quiet about its marketing. Usually i would have been bombarded by info on it already (especially with George Cloony in it), but all i know is it has George Cloony and something to do with traveling on airplanes.

Damn my sources.

I really hope District 9 wins at least one award this year. It's one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in a long time.

Watching Drag Me To Hell and Paranormal Activity (again) last night. Honestly didn't enjoy them that much because the guys with whom I watched them bitched the entire time about how shitty they were.

They are both contenders, but Avatar will only win if they really take into account the box office. Like Return of the King or Titanic, the box office made them win everything. I think that's not going to happen with Avatar, though. Honestly, as of now, it all seems pretty predictable. I've been following the precursors, and I can make some predictions right now:
Picture: The Hurt Locker
Director: The Hurt Locker
Actor: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Actress: Probably Meryl Streep
Sup Actor: C.Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Sup Actress: Mo'Nique, Precious
Adapted Screenplay: Up In the Air
Original Screenplay: Inglourious Basterds
Score: Giacchino, Up
Song: Crazy Heart
Make-up: District 9
Animated: Up
Costume: The Young Victoria
Everything else: Avatar

I like his films...he just has a really odd sense of humor that usually doesn't make it to the screen, I think. Ghost Town was the same way.

I thought it was quite funny. The obvious jokes were pretty rubbish (like the stuff people said instead of lying - why couldn't they just not talk at all if they were going to be mean). The joke about God not existing because no-one had imagination and didn't lie why a good dig. The Pepsi adverts were brilliant too.

The Hurt Locker.
I'll need to watch it again to really gather my opinions, but the fact I was so gripped and transfixed the entire time to even make any proper judgements speaks for itself. I certainly enjoyed but I'll need to see how I feel once I see it a second time.
Just watched. Good war film, comparing a lot to jarhead because i just watched it.
Gritty, real, and not sugarcoated at all. Not about politics at all. About the soldiers. Main statement i kinda failed to pay attention to right at the beginning, the action and fright of "war is like a drug." This drug feeling cna be scary, but addicting at the same time. Very suspenseful. Enjoyable. Not quite an OMG OSCAR AWARD WINNER feeling after watching, but very very good.
oh and Did the beckam kid get killed or was that another kid on the table? confused when the kid came up again to sell DVDs, not sure if it was the same kid.
No, James thought it was Beckam on the table and the others weren't sure. The kid that came up to him was Beckham which is why he was so upset, having invaded that guy's home, and angrily going hunting for insurgents that night causing the other dude to get shot.
Oh and about the Oscar Noms: based on the Golden Globe nominations, I definitely think 4 are already set in stone for the Academy Awards:
Precious
Hurt Locker
Up In The Air
Inglourious
If I were feeling really brave, I'd say An Education might get the fifth spot. I'm not brave, though at it may well go to Avatar even though it shouldn't. An Education, A Serious Man or Moon deserve far more than they've been getting right now and my heart would warm tenfold if any one of these saw a nomination this year.

Tom, you're probably forgetting that we'll have 10 nominated Best Picture films, this year. That said, An Education and Avatar are almost locks, too. I'd say we'll still have Up, Invictus, A Serious Man and District 9 in the line-up.

Ahh shit, you're right. Is it 10 lumped in? 'Cause a friend of mine had a hunch they might do it Golden Globes style with Drama/Musical and Comedy. I'm not thrilled about having 10 in the first place, but your guesses are good.

Yeah, it's 10 lumped in one category, there won't be comedy/drama differentiation.
