Could anyone give me a good definition of alternative. Even influences or what alternative actually sounds like. Please no copy and pasting off wikipedia.
It's just what does alternative sound like?
Any good answers will get a gold star.

I've always pictured alternative as the darker side of rock.
Too heavy for rock, but not heavy metal.
Dance you fucker, dance you fucker.

Its often coupled with indie: i.e. indie/alternative. Anybody who does this should be shot (its ironic that an abriviation of "independant" has become so mainstream :-) ).
I quite like this defenition of alternative rock though:
"Basically, it's any band that have torn a page out of the rock rulebook and used it to wipe their arse."
-TG Summer 2005
Personally i like to use it to describe anything that doesn't fit comfortably into a proper genre. I also like to use it to describe my own band since its so vague it deosn't really put a label on you like attributing yourself to another genre would.

Pixies, Jane's Addiction and our beloved Muse could all be described as alternative rock at some point in their carreers.

Alternative rock, to me, is best described as the kind of rock bands that came out of America in the early nineties that werent "hair metal" (Guns n Roses, etc) or grunge (Nirvana, etc)
The best examples i can give would be The Smashing Pumpkins or REM.
There are no real, good alternative rock acts around at the moment, though i would class System of a Down as alternative metal

Haha, we fucked up!
