The whole megaupload thing is pure greed. "$500 million lost revenue" I'd like to know where they're pulling this figure out from, I'm guessing their arse. Basically they looked at how much they earnt then said "how much would we liked to have earnt?" and arrived at that number.
In all honesty, it probably lost copyright holders well over $500 million. I would say it lost them billions of dollars.
Billions? whatever mate. The majority of megaupload was legitimate legal content.
How much would you say copyright holders lost then? Everything that I have ever encountered on there has been copyrighted.

Yes but piracy doesn't always equate to a lost sale. Many of these people never intended to buy the product in the first place. Many if it wasn't available on the net would just leave it but since it's there thought they'd check it out. It's not like they went to a shop, picked up the film and went to the till then last minute decided to pirate it instead.
I'm not defending it because it does cost them money I just hate how they pull figures from out of their arses all the time.

Reading this article and reading the quotes, the verbage used is pretty over the top. Apparently Megaupload has been involved in "conspiracy" and "sinister schemes to generate massive profits through the distribution of the stolen intellectual property of others." Well I can say that the artists are also robbed of their revenue because record labels take a HUGE chunk of the cut for other people's work. Who's stealing?? Well it's quite obvious it's Money > Freedom. Anyway I've used Megaupload to send raw work files that are too huge to send through email or sendspace. It's a legitimate service to me. The people who abuse the service should be charged no? Why slap on 50 years for the people who run a legitimate website?
and this is my favorite part in the article:
Quote
The RIAA's Sherman, a supporter of SOPA and PIPA, said the Megaupload news demonstrates why the bills are necessary. "If [Megaupload] were hosted and operated, for example, in a foreign country, our government would be essentially powerless to do anything about it. That needs to change," Sherman said.

FBI.GOV is down. Agree with it all or not, this Anonymous attack is incredible. They have taken down the websites of at least:
FBI, US Department of Justice, Warner Music Group, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and quite a few more...

I find this whole thing kind of laughable. It's like trying to close a bar down because a few undesirables drink there. When are these people going to learn that they will never, ever win this way, and the best they can do is join in with the Internet and try to use it to their advantage.

So has anon declared some kind of internet war over the megaupload closing? I haven't really been following what's been going on.

Pipa is 37 - 28 in favor though. With 35 unknown. Any estimation in the American media how those 35 might choose?

I don't know if a plan is bubbling under at /b/. I only go there when super bored. If SOPA and PIPA are approved, I imagine there will be another shizzlestorm.

It depends on their party, but I'm hoping that if it is like any other issue, they'll hop on the bandwagon, which right now is heading towards the vote no side of the issue.

I don't understand why production companies like Universal and Warner don't just take the model of Megaupload and similar sites and provide the content themselves. Megaupload clearly makes money doing what it does. Take their model. At least that way you're making some of the money that you'd lost out on through traffic. Advertise it well, set it up well, provide high quality content.
It costs fuck all to run a site. I'm honestly surprised this hasn't been taken up by someone.
...the fact that it been chosen makes me thing it`ll be pants and were getting NSC 2. - Me, about Survival.

But all that costs precious money!!!! And effort. High quality content? When was the last time the record companies produced high quality content. In fact, when did record companies produce ANYTHING? They just rape the money from the work millions of others do.

Umm could someone explain me how those Megaupload persons are actually charged by USA when no-one of them is a citizen of USA and as far as I know they weren't hosting their website in America?
Besaids I never saw anything wrong in hosting a website that allows the users to upload stuff anyways. It should be the users uploading that illegal stuff who should be charged.
I might be missing something so could somebody explain this for me?
For me it sounds pretty much same if I'd be charged from drinking alcohol at legal age of 18 here because it would brake law if I would be in USA.
And I seriously do not understand why the persons working for Megaupload are called conspirators. It's not like they would have somekind of evil scheme to break down the America

Congress dropped them, and that's good, but I'm still a little annoyed about Megaupload. Obviously there's millions of other places to download from but still...
