I honestly can't imagine ever getting a game specifically for the multiplayer component. Sometimes it's a factor, but the majority of the time it's for the single player. Admittedly, the only time I ever really consider online is with FPS games, but then even still I want a good single player experience too. I wouldn't buy a game just for the online which is why I've never even considered getting something like MAG. A purely online game isn't something that interests me at all. The multiplayer is always just something I do once I've finished the game, like a bonus or extra. Something to drag out the shelf life.

I've had Black Ops since the day it came out and i only started the campaign last week. I only get COD for the Online game; the campaign is wank.
The new Battlefield campaign looks fucking sweet.

I think that's why I rate The original Modern Warfare (CoD4) so much higher than subsequent releases, the campaign's actually pretty decent. Some of it is incredible, moving through that house in Night Vision Goggles whilst silently taking baddies out was great. The interplay between your character and Price in that level was awesome, it made you feel like a real team on a real operation. It was really fucking cool. Similarly the opening mission on the boat. And the sniper mission, outrageously tense. However, the further into that game you went, the more ridiculous the scenarios got and they seem to be carrying that through the series. The Campaigns on each game just get more and more outlandish.
Saying that, I'm not massively keen on the earthquakes in BF3, we'll have to see how well they fit in.

Oh yeah the CoD4 campaign was really good. The levels you listed above were great and the part where you go back in time to the scene on Chernobly (is that what your referring to in "the sniper mission"?) is fucking epic.

I rate MW1 so high because it was an awesome new multiplayer experience. Sadly with another 4 CoD games it's pretty much still the same online experience. Which is why I rate MW1 over the rest.

Modern Warfare was great because it had a genuinely exciting single player campaign and a multiplayer component that was so good that it pretty much became the standard that other online experiences strived to replicate.
A lot of FPS games are just a really naff story cutscenes holding together some various shoot outs, but Modern Warfare actually told a story that was a little more personal, and did so during the levels while you were actually playing aswell as with cutscenes. And because of how they handled the story, the characters that you've been fighting alongside (like Price etc) become more than just NPC's, and so towards the end when business starts picking up I genuinely found myself caring about what happened to them all.
The later COD games unfortunately didn't manage to replicate this; they one upped the action but didn't again find that balance that made the Modern Warfare campaign such a breath of fresh air for the genre.

Multiplayer to me should be the chocolate sprinkled on the top of a coffee, the star on a Christmas tree. It's that little extra something that raises the game. But it needs the solid foundation of a worthwhile single player experience or it just doesn't matter to me.
This exactly.
I completely disagree. For a game like Modern Warfare (and other CoD games) multiplayer is why I got the game. A great single player campaign would be an extra little "chocolate sprinkle", but I buy the games for their great multiplayer experience.
A game does not need a good single player part to be a good game. It doesn't need a good multiplayer part to be a good game either. If one of these two parts is brilliant, the game can be brilliant. Even if the other part is mediocre/shit.
This.
Bioshock 2 is the last FPS that I bought purely for the storyline, or bought expecting the storyline to be worthwhile. It's just not how FPS games work anymore. I'm completely open to multiplayer or single-player FPS games. I love both- I love Bioshock and I love Halo Reach. But rarely does a game manage to blend the two perfectly. One is always better than the other. Just look at Bioshock 2's shitty attempt at multiplayer. Or the spirited but ultimately half-arsed attempt at a campaign in Reach. Those two games are so good because the vast majority of the developers' time was aimed at the campaign, for Bioshock, and the multiplayer for Reach.
To be honest, I wouldn't care if BF3 just didn't have a campaign, and they had just spent 100% of the time on multiplayer. 90% of the people buying games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, Crysis etc... are buying it to sit and waste away their lives on multiplayer. I'm one of them. Why would a developer spend half their time on a campaign that's going to be played about 1% as much as the multiplayer component?

Same. I never get FPS games to play single player. Usually I do play the single player part, but if it's shit, then I don't care much. There are exceptions. Or... At least one. The Halo games usually have a pretty solid single player campaign that I quite enjoy.
For BF3 it's the same. I'd only get it to play online. So if the online part isn't great, I will not buy it. If they completely slashed a campaign and focused on the online part. That's jolly good. Means even better online game for me

Yeah Battlefield has basically always been about the Multiplayer I remember buying 1942 when I was 15 going WTF there's no campaign?! Really what makes the Battlefield series good is also the mod support they were able to have in their previous games. Now I don't think the BF3 will have mod support due to the new engine being so complicated, but to the guy who said Operation Flashpoint or ARMA is a better FPS than BF, check out the Project Reality mod for BF2 might like what you see.

I changed my mind and decided Battlefield 3 does look pretty awesome, but still won't go out of my way to buy it because Gears 3, Arkham City, Skyrim will be taking my money gameswise this year, plus I'm planning on buying other stuff like Blu-Rays, albums, maybe concert tickets... BF3 will be bought over MW3 if the chance arises, but even then it probably won't be until like early 2012 I guess, depends on my income.

exactly, and i dunno ive been looking at gameplay footage and MW3 seems more exciting. i like how finally COD is like done with friggin middle east war and crap. now its like a futuristic feel to it, involving countrys not just in the middle east lol. i cant wait for online AND campaign AND spec ops. spec ops was awesome in Mw2

I'll get both.
MW3 when none of my friends are playing, Battlefield when we can get a squad goin'.
CoD was always easier for me to just jump on casually, trying to lone wolf in BC2 was just a chore.
MW3 will have its steady level of fun factor, but nothing compares to the fun-ness of having a full squad of friends on BC3

Basically this.
I do have to say though the new Spec Ops mode in MW3 does look really fun to play, especially with friends.

I'm holding my breathe on that one. I'm hoping its more like a horde survival mode, but from the videos it almost looks like mini campaign missions that are multiplayer which is kinda meh

It is a survival mode (is a horde survival mode different to normal survival mode?) but they're just using the points system from multiplayer as a currency now I believe so you can upgrade weapons and all that.
At least they didn't go zombies, I hated the zombie modes.

I can totally see why you'd think what you thought though.
I'm pretty sure some articles I read on it said Spec Ops survival mode on it as well. If it isn't a survival mode I probably won't be buying the game... Well until I could get it at least half price.

I don't care. I think both games a re going to be epic, so I will play both. Sure, maybe MW3 will be too alike its predecessors (both, which were great games so I don't see the problem) but I have followed the COD-series and all the games developed by Infinty Ward were awesome so, I don't MW3 will be.
I have never stuck for the Battlefield-series, BF2 was boring and I never got the time around to play the Bad Company-games. But the trailer is rad and Dice are Swedish, so I will play that too.
Everybody hates Modern Warfare because it's mainstream. Damn hipsters.
