I prefer Scorcese so much over Nolan. The Batman films have been great and Memento and Inception were good, but I really didn't like The Prestige much.

Extremely disappointed with this film.
Too much exposition. Too much cheese. Too much deus ex machina.
I also find the threat of an atomic bomb to be overused and boring, although I did like the idea that it will go off regardless in 5 months.
I`ll need to watch it again, but with cinema tickets being 18 euro in Japan that wont be happening till the DVD release or a decent quality upload.
I just found the whole thing underwhelming. Then again, I didn`t particularly enjoy The Dark Knight the first time I saw it but now think it`s an excellent movie, so we`ll see. This is a regular feeling with Nolan films.
Waaa???
Christopher Nolan is the best director in the world. Hands down.
First off, no, Nolan is not the best director in the world. One of the best, yes. The best? No.
Secondly, I don't think Name meant any insult towards Nolan. I think he was just saying that he usually doesn't like his films when he first watches them, but grows to love them after a few watches. He just said he didn't enjoy TDK at first but now thinks its an excellent movie, which it is.
Yep. That`s exactly what I meant. TDK, The Prestige, Inception. I didn`t like any of these films after the initial watch. I now think they`re some of the best out there and The Prestige is one of my favourite films of all time. TDKR may very well prove itself in the near future to me.
As for the Scorsese, he`s made some great movies lately. The Departed and Shutter Island were fantastic. I`ve heard good things about Hugo but have yet to see it. Not to mention the premiere of Boardwalk Empire as well.
Pretty much all of Nolan's films are my favourites of all time. Inception being my personal No. 1, but surely Inception is a contender for general greatest film of all time anyway. No?
The Prestige is the most under-rated film of all time.

I really enjoyed the movie.
I don't really enjoy watching Batman Begins and TDK over again, but for some reason I really want to see TDKR again badly. Maybe because there is so much to process, but it was a really good movie IMO and I want to see at least once more.

Speaking of The Prestige, I feel this Batman trilogy was a genius nod towards the the three steps in the prestige. To quote Cutter:
"The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't. Batman Begins
The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. The Dark Knight (possibly even referring to the Joker with the fooling?)
But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige"." The Dark Knight Rises (Batmans final few moments? )
It's all speculation, but I really do think (perhaps hope!) that Nolan is exactly this type of magical director.

I, uh.... what..? ....Really??!
And I wouldn't say The Prestige is underrated, although I know what you mean. I'd say it's just not received as much publicity and distribution as some of his other (particularly more recent) films. I'm not sure I've met a single person who's watched The Prestige and thought it wasn't good.

You don't like Inception? Everyone I know raves about it. When I watched it at the cinema the day it came out, as the credits came on literally half of the people in there stood up and applauded. It was mental.
That's the problem though, people who have seen it think it's great, but no a lot of people have. Based on personal experience, a lot of people are just completely un-aware of it Have no idea it exists. It's an amazing film, absolute quality. It's a brilliant idea and with a director like Nolan and actors such as Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johanson, Michael Cane and David Bowie! How have people not heard about this film?? Plus, Thom Yorke did the song on the credits.

Inception if fantastic, but is not the greatest film of all time. Not even close. It's not even DiCaprio's best movie. If it is your favourite film, fine, but it's not the best.
Inception is not even in the same league as films like Godfather, Godfather 2, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, etc.

Mehhh....I disagree. I think it's at least up there. And I think it probably is the best film Di Caprio has been in. It didn't necessarily produce his best acting, but probably his best film. I think Shutter Island produced his best acting moments. I love Di Caprio though, he's quality. Can think of film he's been in that I don't like/love. What would say his best is, Matt?
Not the biggest fan of Godfather, Shawshank Redemption is great, but no where near best of all time and yes Pulp Fiction is quality.

DiCaprio has been in better films. The Departed, Aviator, Gangs Of New York - I think those are all better than Inception. Heck, I even enjoyed Shutter Island more than Inception. My feelings on Inception kinda deteriorated now that I've seen the movie a few times. It's fantastic the first time you watch it, but I don't feel like it really holds up over time. The more I watch it, the less I like it. Still a great film though.
How can you not like Godfather???? I'm pretty sure you're the only person that I've seen that hasn't liked The Godfather. Not even Godfather 2? They're such perfect movies, everything is so great in them. Shawshank is such a great movie, it's easily one of the best. Even amongst the interwebs, its generally regarded as one of the best films ever.

To be fair, who are you to decide what's objectively speaking the best films?
The most objective opinion is probably the opinion of the majority of people. A quick look at iMDB's list ranks Inception at #14. And that's after more than half a million votes. I don't think we get much closer to a definitive objective list of best movies ever made.
Sure the movies you mention make out the top 4 on that list, so maybe Inception isn't quite in the same league, but to say it's "not even close". To me that makes you seem like the more biased person.
Personally I don't think Inception is truly a contender for best movie. But I would probably rank it in the top 25, and off the top of my head, I can't think of a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio which I prefer to Inception.
About The Prestige: Great movie. Just hasn't received enough attention. I haven't heard of anyone who didn't like it either... Apart from Nogli. Then again, I haven't heard of many people who've actually watched it.

To be fair, when you say something is "one of the best movies of all time" I consider it to be at least 10 worthy. I said I don't think Inception is, and then said it's also not considered one of the best (not in top 10 at least) on any website/blog/whatever else. I had no idea Pulp Fiction was in the top 4 though, that's awesome.
Of course best movie is opinion-based, but I was just going by general opinions of things. Sure, Inception is number 14 over at IMDB, but I didn't see Inception on many other lists (maybe only one or two others), I was going by what were more famously considered some of the best movies. I also personally do not think Inception is one of the best, as I believe there are many other movies that are better - and the majority of the internet seems to have agreed with that. I'm not attacking anyone (hope I didn't come across like that), I do think Inception is a fantastic movie, but I disagree that it's worthy of being regarded as one of the best. Even on Rotten Tomatoes (not the most reliable by any means), Inception isn't even in Leo's top 5 movies. Again, that's just an internet thing, so it's more or less a generalized statistic.
In attempt to get the thread back on track..... The Dark Knight Rises. Great movie. Looking at that IMDB list, it's already reached number 18 on the best movies of all time list...

It's not that I don't like Inception. I do like it, although I think people overrate it a tad. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it when I first went to see it.
I just can't understand how it could be one of the greatest films of all time. Most people like it because it's a breathtaking mixture of action and a clever idea/plot. That's not a bad thing, by any means, but it doesn't let the film really flourish in other areas. More people love it because they think it's 'siiiiiick' as opposed to actually sitting down (metaphorically) and working out what exactly what was good and bad about it. It's so overwhelming in terms of how epic it is that people can easily get over-enthusiastic about it.
I'm sure it'll be considered a classic for years to come, and it might even take the place of Die Hard on TV at Christmas (which would be a feat!) but there's a sort of excited-kid air to the way people go on about Inception. It's clever, and it's entertaining - and it's certainly better than a hell of a lot of other recent action film releases - but saying it's one of the greatest films of all time is a massive, massive claim. Although it would be stupid to suggest that there is a pick of films which should be seen as the greatest (i.e. the few suggested above - The Godfather, Shawshank etc).

I'm the complete opposite with Inception :P The second time I watched it I enjoyed it even more. I think it's timeless, which is a huge element in making a truly great movie.

Watched it again the other day. Did anyone think that, when Blake says (about Gordon) 'one of the other officers asked him if he saw any giant alligators down there' it was a sneaky reference to Killer Croc?

Really enjoyed the film, very very good. My only complaint is that after building up Bane so much, I felt it disposed of him from the story awfully bluntly and suddenly considering his power. Liked the change of focus in baddie of the film, but it just seemed to totally forget him. Very impressed with the Natalia swerve as I completely didn't see it coming though.
Thought Michael Caine made the film though. Needed to be in it more as his scenes were perfect.

I think Christopher Nolan is just a classier Michael Bay. Both focus on the visual parts, mainly. While watching Inception and The Dark
Knight Rises it feels like he thinks first what would look cool to show and then makes a kind of story and narrative to reach that point,
and sometimes it feels kind of lame, like how all the cops in Gotham only come up with that stupid plan, they were all
punching each other even though they all had guns - but it did feel epic, didn't it. Inception was the same. Just because something is super complex, super trippy, super cool,
doesn't exactly make it good. The way the story was told in Inception was diculous. It needed Juno in there basically explaining every single
thing that was happening. That's not good storytelling, and I respect other people's opinions and all that, but to compare that to The Godfather...
The good thing about Nolan is he makes good visual spectacles and usually draws from a good concept for a movie. But the way he develops the movie
and its narrative is usually pretty stupid. Also, the twist in this movie was absolutely pointless, but he knows people love those.
And while IMDB's top 250 has its own merits, namely being able to include a huge number of movies from almost every decade, with movies
from different times, even making people today become interested in other classics... But we have to look at it subjectively,
because it's obvious that recent movies will always be more popular today than the older ones, and if you notice the highest rated movies
you'll notice that people really really love twists. And we all know how Nolan loves that too. Add twists + trippy stories + visual masturbation
+ a sexy director, and there you have it.
But after all it comes down to opinions , and that was mine.
|
|
|
That's pretty much exactly what I was trying to say before, but in much better/further detail. The storyline thing particularly frustrates me, because there's always one character (like Ellen Page in Inception) who sums everything up after the information has been given to you. I remember watching Batman Begins for the first time (quite a few years ago now) and deducing everything which was going on, thinking I was all clever... and then Morgan Freeman just explained it all at Bruce Wayne's birthday party.
But yeah he loves his powerful visuals. I mean Inception was pretty much one big powerful visual. It's exactly the kind of film he'd love to make purely because he can put anything in it. I never quite understood why all those shops started exploding in the scene where Leo is explaining everything to that slut in the cafe... and then I realised that Nolan didn't have to have a reason - he just wanted to make everything look ridiculous. It's like the bit where the freight train flies down the road and takes out a load of cars.
I agree about his concepts, too. His films are always spectacular in the actual ideas involved - look at any Tarantino film, for example, (although you could choose a multitude of directors here) and they all basically involve gangsters, drugs, a lot of money, a lot of swearing and racial slurs and a bit of blood. There's never any amazing concept behind them but he does them well. With Nolan, he'll bring up a concept which will hit you in the face before you've even seen the trailer.
- A man who can't remember anything and so has to tattoo clues on his body to find his wife's killers?!?!??!?
- A magician who can make two of himself?!?!?
- A man who can enter people's dreams within dreams within dreams!??!?
- Batman!??!?
Thankfully, though, he at least knows how to execute his ideas by making good films out of them. I just feel that some fans think that the idea itself is what makes the film good.
Look at that new film coming out (can't remember what it's called) where Joseph Gordon Levitt/Bruce Willis is an assassin who gets sent victims from the future and kills them in a field. Looks like an awesome concept, and immediately you go 'wowwwwwww that's such a good idea!' But unfortunately it otherwise looks shit. It happens with so many films. Hell, look at the Saw series. They had some cool traps and stuff which made you think 'ooh that looks like a really hard decision' but otherwise the films (bar the first one) were fucking terrible. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was similar (although I actually thought that was a great film, and credit to F. Scott Fitzgerald for the idea too) - you almost love it before you know anything else about the film.
One particular great recent example is that In Time film. The directors/writers were lucky enough to come up with a relatively original, exciting concept - that time becomes a currency and to stay alive you have to basically earn as much time as possible - and what happened to that? I haven't heard anything about that since the trailer came out. A quick Google tells me it got 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Bit of a flop.
But as I said, Nolan can at least actually make a good film out of a crazy idea. I just think he should try something a tad more down to earth because it would bring out more of his qualities as a film-maker rather than hiding them behind an epic/awesome concept and visual spectacles.
Small change got rained on with his own thirty-eight, and nobody flinched, down by the arcade.

The shops start exploding because Ellen Page has just realized she is in a dream and is panicking. Her subconscious creates it. She cant control that. And for the freight train, well isnt it obvious? We see numerous times that Leo has a memory in which he kills himself and his wife in the dream by getting crushed by a freight train. That memory is being brought into the dream by his subconscious because his wife is constantly on his mind.
This next song is for anyone who likes a bit of rnb
