Quick post as I'm at work, but can't believe there hasn't been a topic on this tragedy before. However, it's turning from tragedy into a true story of human spirit, and something that is just fantastic to see. I'm flicking on and off to BBC News watching the rescue unfold and to see the happiness and spirit on show outside that mine as they're winched out is truly heartwarming.
In a world going truly to hell, this is one of the nicest things I've seen this year. Maybe there's hope for us yet.

It's awesome to see everyone being recovered and the scenes of jubilation when they come up. Good on them 
Although the various news channels' '# of 33 miners rescused' makes me think that at the end we'll get an Achievement Unlocked pop up...

Exactly. And usually with these kind of stories, there isn't such a happy ending, usually just a number of dead miners. The fact that they were underground for so long, kept their heads, won the hearts of a nation and then brought it together at a time of disharmony, and then the elation we're seeing now as they're winched up...it's really great in such a shit time.
@LukeMcC - I had the same thought, wonder what we'll get when they're all up?

Good that they got them out and all... but did the world really need to be bombarded with news about it to such an extent? Must be a serious lack of actual news going on atm.

I hate this news story... Not the actual event itself, it's great that these miners are finally being rescued after all this time and that they survived the explosion in the first place, but I hate that it's such a big news story. There must be something more important happening in the world right now...

I think it's pretty amazing how everyone has come together and it's all so positive. The news is 99% negativity obviously, since we live how we live, but to see something like this is a breath of fresh air

We hear about international aid reaching poor stricken nations almost daily... so to say the news is always negative is a bit off.

I can see where you and Roos are coming from Barnaby, but in my view there's more to it than just the story. I know it's getting complete blanket coverage, but these days it's mostly bad news. Of course, bad news makes "good" news, for the news networks obviously, and genuine good news doesn't always get the coverage. So sometimes it's nice to just see something good happen. Something that's not a broken man shooting up a village; something that isn't news of impending terror attacks; something that isn't about the recession and how it's going to be baked beans out of a tin for the rest of our lives.
To see the faces of the families as their loved ones emerged after 2 months stuck underground was truly heartwarming to me, and it showed that good things do happen in the world sometime. Of course, we're now at the peak of it all, by this time next week, these people will be hounded to death by the media to sell their story, and then it will be getting just too much.

I was watching the coverage this morning and I found it amazing. I have to agree with Chris above that it's fantastic to get some good news for a change. It was a really nice thing to watch, especially seeing that second guy who was just so happy to get out.
How many are out now, apparently it's one every hour and there's 33 of them so I'm presuming they're still being rescued.

another day or so of rescues I think, although I think they were ahead of schedule.

I see what you mean, but you don't have to look far to find other good news. This is very popular news which happens to be good, but usually bad news gets more coverage because, as you said, that is "good" news for the media. But soldiers returning from war, that's good news, you could see crying family members then. And we are at war, so that happens quite often.
This news was good, but they're overdoing it, this is overkill.
Do you know "Russell Howards Good News"? Russell Howard made that program because news was so depressing, I love that show (and Russell Howard ). (Wikipedia says a third series will start on the 21st of October  .)

13 miners still have to be rescued.
I think heartwarming is the right word to describe this. Did you see the look on the face of the son of the 1st miner to be rescued? The boy started to cry when he saw his dad... With so many bad news, this is really something uplifting. I just hope nothing bad happens now.

This next one will be interesting. It turns out that Yonni Barrios, who is on the way up, was having an affair. That girlfriend will be greeting him, and his wife of 28 years has boycotted it. She's not happy.
EDIT: Or so she said, apparently she is there. It will be an odd reunion...

Apparently the operation could be completed by the end of the Chilean day. It's great how everyone around the world has been giving messages of goodwill, and that the Chilean government have put in place a specific plan for the rehabilitation of the miners after they've checked out of hospital, instead of taking them out of the ground and saying "Off with you now, did you want something?".

This is so amazing to watch live, and so, so emotional. I don't even want to go to bed till it's all over.

Its fucking bullshit if you ask me, according to "the good news", the mine they were working down has had a long history of being unsafe and has collapsed on numerous occasions injuring many before and even killing one.
The fact that these people were
a) let down there in the first place to work even with this previous knowledge
and
b) they went down there permission or not
makes this whole story rather redundant...
The President or whatever the Chilean leader calls himself seen on the news waving his little flag should be shitting his pants that stricter laws haven't been implemented at least for that mine with regards as to using it for industry. If I were the workers I would now be rubbing my hands at all of the money I could potentially make from
a) the mining company for neglecting health and safety.
and
b) the state for allowing companies to practice unsafe extraction.
This story is more a triumph for exposing shitty work practices in Chile over anything else.

Yeah, everyone knows that those mines are dangerous and there had already been safety issues. Some miners had already complained about that before the accident. And yeah, this situation is a great opportunity for the Chilean president to be in good graces. Of course things should be better and we shouldn't forget about that.
That's why this is a huge victory. Despite so many adversities all 33 miners managed to survive the first 17 days without any kind of contact with the exterior. And the rest of the time. And the fact that hopefully every person who was trapped will come out alive. That is amazing. That is good news.
