Received my copy of TR yesterday and haven't stopped listening to it since, especially one particular song, Unnatural Selection.

It's one of the most different Muse songs (as are any of the other album tracks really) and I think is just, all in all, one of the greatest Muse songs ever, possibly beating Citizen Erased in my opinion.

So, who here thinks Unnatural Selection is the definitive, greatest Muse song to date?

I can't decide, I don't think so, Exo's pretty damn close. B&H had always been favorite, still might be, it's lacking an epic piano solo the best song might go to Exo: Cross Pollination.

Unnatural Selection is really good, one of my favourites from TR, but I don't think it's the definitive Muse song. As they said, there is no definitive Muse song, but if there was, I think it would probably be Exogenesis, at least because Matt said it's the one he wants to be remembered for.

Unnatural Selection sounds like another band trying to sound like Muse to me. There's no conviction behind that riff. Maybe this will change with a live version.

Citizen Erased all the way for me.

Although Exogenesis I-III is starting to come close.

No.

I can't decide fully if I like it yet. The main riff is pretty cool, but there is something missing. Seems kinda cheesy, maybe cliched. Can't really put my finger on it. I get that feeling from most of the new albums middle section anyway.

No, Exogenesis, Citizen both better.

But I don't think there's a definitive Muse song, for example, I couldn't be happy without Shine, or Eternally Missed, they're not standout, but they still contribute massively.

No.

Although I like Unnatural Selection, it seems to lack something that songs like Stockholm Syndrome, Citizen Erased, Knights of Cydonia or Butterflies & Hurricanes have. And this idea of "the definitive Muse song" sounds like they're going to end pretty soon. I don't think Muse are quite definitive (at least yet).

I think Citizen is probably better too. But I just don't think there can BE a "definitive" muse song, they are such a diverse group.

The definitive Muse song is either Muscle Museum, Citizen Erased, or Hysteria. In my opinion.

Hysteria FTW fo' sho'. There's not a song on TR that comes close to SS, New Born, SMBH, Blackout, Citizen Erased, KoC, MM, Fury...

Unnatural Selection is one of my favourites off the album, but there is a part that sounds unsettlingly like Lay All Your Love On Me by ABBA and then they've done one of those histrionic harmonies Serj Tankian likes so much to try to cover it up.

Yarp! ^_^ I'm quite surprised by how highly-rated Exogenesis is already. And Resistance would be way harder to mash up with Britney Spears. Though I'm rather liking Uprising, MK Ultra, Unnatural Selection, Guiding Light and (perplexingly) Undisclosed Desires!

Just as The Bends, the My Iron Lung EP and OK Computer are my Radiohead holy trinity, I see OoS, the Dead Star/In Your World EP and Absolution becoming my essential Muse releases. The new stuff is pretty good, but it's a long way from the band I got into when I was 15.

I think he means 'definitive' as summing up their body of work as a whole. If we're going by most widely-recognised then it's surely Starlight?
