A general thread for those who wish to expand within the progressive genre. Click on a artist to hear one of their recommend songs. All forms of prog are welcome and please specify this if possible, ie. Prog Metal, Space Rock, New Prog, ect ect.. I got the idea from the Metal thread that already exists.

The definition of progressive rock: "Progressive rock (often shortened to prog or prog rock) is a form of rock music that evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of a "mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility." Progressive rock bands pushed "rock's technical and compositional boundaries" by going beyond the standard rock or popular verse-chorus-based song structures. Additionally, the arrangements often incorporated elements drawn from classical, jazz, and world music. Instrumentals were common, while songs with lyrics were sometimes conceptual, abstract, or based in fantasy."-Source (more here)

(Newly added marked as color red/bold)

click on the desired band to hear a sample of their music. If you find any broken links please be quick to report them here.

I love all those bands mentioned except for Tool, I haven't heard a lot from them.

Opeth are supposed to be pretty good.
Pure Reason Revolution are awesome, kinda similar to Oceansize and PT in a way, although their latest album is very electro rock.
Pink Floyd... no explanation needed
Pineapple Thief, they're ok.

i would't call muse prog rock, no more. maybe prog pop... the same applies to dredg, who released a disappointing poppy album, yesterday.

i think progressive means something partly new in a music. playing with rhythms, with instruments, with sounds, with electronics.

Luuuurve it. Currently addicted to 60s-70s prog. Mostly to Yes.

I'd recommend:
- Gentle Giant
- Beardfish
Both very unknown but awesome.

and obviously

- Pink Floyd
- Pure Reason Revolution (seriously)
- Tool
- Opeth

Muse are not prog in my opinion. At all!

Can't believe I forgot to add Pink Floyd (I grew up listening to them). Also, I do listen to some Pure Reason Revolution. Their good, but I'm not entirely fond of them. Also, I agree that Muse don't fit into your traditional prog category, but I'm going by what their Wikipedia page says.

Well if you read what the definition of progressive rock actually is, I can totally see muse being classified as prog, but yes they are very alternative rock aswell.

^ They only have two albums so get both if you can. The first one (The Dark Third) is more progressive, the latest is more electronic (called Amor Vincit Omnia) but I love both.

Nobody mentions The Mars Volta??? they're fantastic, I can't get enough of them... and the new songs sound great.

I like quite a few Prog bands, but my personal favourite ones are usually off-shoots of prog. Six by Mansun (sort of a nu-progressive, or progressive britpop album, if you will) is my favourite Prog album, and I thoroughly recommend it to all. It's like 50 pop tunes in 13 tracks. Fantastic.

i think has become too predictable to be really progressive, though. to me, progressive is something else than anything that existed before. i absolutely understand when someone has a different view in which progressive is more something like a genre (in which i'd count muse in, then).
