GAH!!! No matter what any of you will now say below, noone can agree on what "indie" really is (or emo you arguring idiots). Even if there is a real definition, people still calling everything indie indie indie indie indie indie indie indie. mainstream BOOH! indie Good! No your not indie! your music is not real indie! You music is all mainstream crap! well your music is just wierd as fuck indie shit!!!
SHUT UP!!!!!
i listen to all types of music i like, regardless of popularity, fans, or perceptions. yet indie purist limit themselves in music tastes as much as people who only listen to top 40 shit
(this is not a hate of a type of music, just the fans/ music industry perception)
MUSE ARE NOT INDIE (or emo as i heard one kid say, i started yelling, i was angry)
-It was first mostly indepent rock.
-Then non mainstream stuff, underground, not well known
-Then indie bands became more mainstream and kept their indie tagline
-Then there is so much indie that indie elitists have to argue what is real indie and what is not.
-Indie "purists" start dissing bands because they "try to hard" such as muse.
(so what the hell is Muse supposed to do? matt whistle, dom handclap, and chris play as simple as possible cherry little basslines?)
This even mentions muse in its definitions
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=indie
I like to harass people on last fm who abuse the term and then they go to diss me and find i listen to half of what they call indie music.

i agree. i also have been talked shit too cause i listen to indie and apparently its mainstream?. no its not. there are some bands that do credit themselves as indie but are certainetly not. i think an example is gym glass heroes. but they are "mainstream music" and shitty.
indie to me is obviously independent music. so making music the way you want to and not following any stereotypes.
good examples of indie music are...
the shins
minus the bear
etc.
but thats my opinion. and also i think indie music has developed a certain sound too. exmaple would be those two bands. like how the guitars sound and all. but indie in general can be applied to alot of bands if we are talking "independent"
also to me the definition of "mainstream music" is shitty pop music and top 40 music.

I agree.
People can listen to whatever they wish, and people will always have opinions about music, but so called proper indie-elitists really annoy me.
To each their own I suppose, but musical elitism pisses me off.
Weird though as one of my friends despairs for what goes as "indie" in Britain.
British indie - jangly mainstream guitar bands that have mostly style and no substance.
American indie - where it "originated" apparently, and yeah, the Shins, Minus the Bear, Pavement etc. are prime examples.
I think it's less of a label ("independent") and more of a genre/movement (jangly, sometimes lo-fi guitar rock/pop)
Also, yeah, Pitchfork are cocks. Except they gave Kid A a perfect score, which was well deserved. Haha.

it bothers me when people are so into being "indie"
when a band they like is played on the radio, they go- let's celebrate the death of a great band, gah i can't listen to them anymore.. i mean did you even like them in the first place?

sub-pop is a pretty solid indie label now....seeing how it used to be back in the early 90's when nirvana was signed to them and seeing how they are now is pretty cool. also both bands i mentioned i beileve are signed to them. and both from the state of washington if im correct

I've given up on genres. Too many people are too ignorant. I just like what I like and call it what I want.

Damn straight.
Only three genres in my vocabulary:
- Awesome
- Okay
- Shit
And they work perfectly

I've always assumed Indie was stuff like Suede, or Broken Social Scene as opposed to nonsense like Fratellis, or the kooks, or whatever shit is getting played on the radio nowadays.
but tbh, i dont really care.
musical elitism is one of the most annoying things ever. which is probably very hypocritical of me to say that. well i hate everyone who is more elitist than me. :P

I hate that people try to define Indie as a style of music, its not.
Indie incorporates everything from death metal to elevator music, it's only Indie because the artist is on an independent label.
Indie only separates from "mainstream" music (which is just as popular as indie music these days) when certain bands sound the same, for example Indie Dance Music is different to Mainstream Dance Music.
So what I'm trying to say is WHATS THE DEAL WITH CALLING INDIE A GENRE!?

Pitchfork have never done a decent, honest review. Kid A can't be perfect, because not everyone who has heard it would say it's perfect
Sadly, the majority of it's readers will shun any band that becomes popular. the site takes pride in itself and it's "indie" ways, but the irony is they would stick a comparison to Radiohead in the majority of it's reviews.

This is one of those posts that I would give a sensible and informative contribution to if I thought that it would make even one iota of difference. But it won't. People will still argue about it. So I'm not going to answer the original question and will simply say that Pitchfork are fucking cock jockeys.
It's weird. Pitchfork basically cover most of my favourite music. We have very similar taste a lot of the time. I use Pitchfork to see what new albums are out, knowing that if they're being featured I'll probably like them.
But their reviewing style is utterly atrocious to an almost embarrassing level. They're so far up their own arses I feel sorry for them. I'm all about diversity in music, and liking as much as I can.
Last time I checked, the dictionary definition of 'diversity' wasn't 'wank over every Canadian indie band that releases anything, ever, and shun the rest'. So fuck Pitchfork.

i laughed so hard when i read the review for chemical brothers old album "come with us"
(something close to this)
"every time you almost hear the music the Brothers wow with some amazing little sinth twitter, or new flashy beat." (this was meant as a insult)
well what the fuck are amazing instrumentals supposed to be? chemical brother made an amazing techno trance album, its music. They treat its like its not, that the real music HAS to be some simple little arrangment hiding behind it.

I don't know much about Pitchfork, but I stopped caring about genres and what's mainstream/indie a long time ago. They usually end up pissing me off.
Do you think that America has been covertly supporting conflict in geo-strategic flash points across the Eurasian land-mass in order to stop unification and subsequently safeguard its aspiration towards global hegemony?

I agree with everything that you said about Pitchfork. I generally like most of the bands that they like. However, must you berate the Canadian indie bands?

I'm not berating Canadian indie bands. I like loads of Canadian indie bands. I was just pointing out that Pitchfork gets a hard on for them and kind of shuns a lot of other things.

bah, indie annoys me in every way possible.
To a certain extent I agree that indie shouldn't be a genre because it means independent label. However now that it has come to mean a certain style of self-obsessed jangly pop with ironic lyrics and posers as front-people there's no stopping it. If the masses think Indie is a style of music then it's a style of music.
Unfortunately one of my favourite ever bands (The Decemberists) somehow came to be known as an indie band in the genre sense when they used to just be a sort-of-folk-rock band on an indie label.
So maybe I'm a hypocrite.

No, they don't. And no, they're not. Muse aren't anything close to being an Emo band, and never have been, and almost certainly never will be. The only genres Muse really dabble with is variations of rock (alternative, hard), pop, classical, and at a stretch of the imagination, prog and electro.
