They trashed their instruments a lot in the early days of Showbiz and Origin Of Symmetry but it's more toned down and chilled now.

i cant decide why matt smashes a ibenez up everytime he has 1, i know they're shit and he knows it so why does he buy them,

i think they use 2 smash things up alot in their early days cos
1/ cost, the equipment they ave now is prob more expensive
2/ they're more professial now
3/ oh fuck it matt will stil smash everythin up if he wants 2

Matt said in an interview once that they sometimes do it to relieve the stress of a bad performance.

I heard that about smashing instruments too.

But I think they do it at big shows [especially filmed shows] because it looks awsome and the fans love it.

lol the who used to spend like a grand on new instruments each week and make about 250 quid from gigs at the start, never stopped them, best smashy bit at earls was when they had to peice the kit back together to do the outro riff while matt had that crazy monkey look in his eye playing with his stack

Best smashing of stuff for me was at Glastonbury 2004, Matt got an amp from the side of the stage, dragged it centre-stage, tipped it on it's side, started jumping on it while playing the outro riff. Then Chris jumped down from the stage and was getting pulled into the crowd (still playing) then matt straddled the bass drum. Then to finish the gig Chris smashed his bass guitar into the bass drum (went in first time).
I spose that was the best smashage for me cos I was there (woo)

p.s sorry that this isn't exactly a reply to the question

Matt only trashes guitars that are not custom made for him, obviously. not because they are expensive which they are but becasue they are design specially for him and so obviously you wouldnt trash it!

Tho i read somewhere that Chris said Matt smashed up the early black Manson and threw it into a bin while on tour in the states a few months back....That may have been Q mag, or Kerrang.
