Well everyone seems to be obsessed with building and modifying guitars on here these days, myself included, and there was talk of a sticky for this topic. I've rounded up a couple of topics of interest, and left links in here for anyone to use. If a mod would be so inclined, they could make this sticky along with the FF and Rig topics, otherwise we'll just keep it bumped to try and cut down on the miriad of topics this gets.

Custom Guitar - Dirt Cheap - Zooropa's topic, offering help and work on building a cheap custom guitar.

Making a Manson-esque Guitar - Hooglebug's topic, showcasing his amazing guitars, and also some advice on how to build your own.

Phase 90 Internal Help - A topic that will hopefully eventually include advice on how to build an MXR Phase 90 into your guitar - just like Matt's.

Fitting a Tele Humbucker - advice on changing the bridge of a standard Telecaster to accomodate a humbucking pickup.

Internal Effects - Not strictly an advice topic, but more a discussion on what internal effects could be included in a guitar.

Fitting a Tremolo Arm - Fitting a tremolo arm to a certain bridge.

Wiring a Kill-Switch - An extremely popular question on hundreds of guitar forums, especially Muse related ones. Advice on how to build in a kill switch to your guitar.

Modifying a standard guitar - Jeff_sterling84's topic on the process of modifying his Ibanez GAX70. There's a lot of good stuff about finishes in here.

Making a Kaoss Pad from a Laptop Touch Pad - not strictly under the category of buitar building and modifying, but is an ongoing topic about how to create the effects used in the Kaoss Pad but on a Laptop track pad. Don't think we ever found out how!

I've only got topics from the first five or so pages of this forum, so if there's any others to add, just let me know and I'll edt.

Now let's bump this until it's made sticky!

EDIT:

Performing the Kaoss Mod - a forum topic from outside Muselive which outlines how to fit a Kaoss Pad into your guitar. It's a little more unsophisticated and bitty than the method Matt uses, but you can ask Tomassio and Zooropa on this forum how it sounds and looks!

Project Guitar - hundreds of tutorials on building/modifying/repairing etc etc. Good site.

Ideas for a Killswitch - in addition to the other topic already listed for killswitches, this contains a few different ideas for wiring them

Changing Bass strings - help on the basics of changing strings on a bass guitar, but works pretty much the same for all guitars.

Making a Mirrortop - Discostu's efforts to make a mirrortop guitar.

Thankya, thankya...

Now if only the mods would pin this topic, my efforts would be immortalised! I'll update this topic tomorrow with some other posts, and maybe some sites from outside Muselive.

EDIT : Added a new link, to do with fitting a Kaoss Pad.

Ok, so I'm putting a humbucker (Crunchbox ) in my tele, is this the right template for the routing? The I just cut the hole with... whatever?

To put a bridge humbucker in? It's going to take some heavy duty routing to cut through the metal of the existing bridge. Might be better picking up a pre-routed humbucker bridge.

No I'm buying a humbucker sized bridge, but the guitar guy at my school said the hole would need a bit of re-shaping to fit the humbucker...

I don't think it will, but then I've never seen a Crunchbox in terms of size. The only thing I had to route was the space beneath the bridge, and even then it was just a couple of holes either side for the screws. Nothing major, certainly nothing that needed a routing template.

As I'm now obsessed with RATM, I want a killswitch.

I've google'd it numerous times, but they were all talking shit, in my eyes anyway. Can someone tell me how to install a killswitch, except put it in electronic - noob language, as i haven't a scooby about electronics.

And yeah, I've read the 'how to wire a killswitch' thread but, to be honest, that confused me more, lol.

Even a link to a simple tutorial would be great

I don't think there is a simple tutorial on that subject. I tried and failed many times to install a kill-switch, even though it was explained in the simplest terms. I think the most important part is to choose the right kind of switch, then its easy enough as far as I know. But then, as my now pretty much fucked (electronically) Tele testifies, I shouldn't be consulted on matters electronic.

kill switch it pretty much, switch between your volume pot and jack plug, or pick ups and volume put if you like, one side of the switch to your jack socket of volume put depending on which way around you do it, and the other to the ground ie the back of your volume pot.

Not strictly guitar building stuff but I don't know where else to post this...

I'm getting my whammy delivered tomorrow () and I want to get it all hooked up to my comptuer, which will soon have Cubase (legally, of course) and yes - you guessed it - I want to do the MotP effect :P

I think I've got a fairly good idea of what I'm doing, except from this... how do I physically link the whammy to the computer? I mean... I know it's with a midi cable, but how does the midi cable go into the computer? My school has these small blue boxes which you can plug midi cables into, but they're Macs using Pro Tools... so is it different with pcs? Or do I have to actually buy a little box similar to the Pro Tools one?

Any help is great

Edit: Cancel that... my 'legal' copy of Cubase doesn't work. I've done some more forum browsing and it looks like I need more than the whammy anyway, so it doesn't matter

On a side note: FUCK YEAH!! I'm getting my whammy tomorrow!

On a second side note: FUCK NO!! I still can't play MotP!

You can get a MIDI to USB converter from Maplin, but you could probably get one cheaper of t'internet..

Something like this?

I'll be needing one anyway for when I get a keyboard so... I might as well get one

EDIT.com/question:

Could you control a whammy with an X/Y pad? I'm considering the purchase of a Kaoss Pad, and since there's a midi input in the whammy, I was wondering if you could piss about with it with the Kaoss Pad... I mean... the actual pad itself is just a midi controller isn't it? So I don't see why it wouldn't work...

I'm still familiarising myself with the whole midi thing anyway, so excuse me if that was a retarded thought and I should go back to Muse school.

You mean just using the Kaoss to control the Whammy? I'm sure it would work. Just put a MIDI cable between the MIDI out on the KP and the MIDI pn the WHammy. Theoretically.

Excellent. Thanks

Question about pups...

I had a nosy under my pickguard/bridge for the first time tonight, and after seeing some random articles kicking about saying that some Mexican Teles had their neck pup holes already routed for a humbucker, so out of curiousity I looked. Here's what I found...

Now this may seem like a stupid question to all you guitar builders but - is mine one of the already routed guitars? As in, would a humbucker/P-90 fit in there? I would imagine it would, because of the rectangular shape, but I'm not sure so I figured I'd make sure before I go get a sustainer.

Also, I've read that a Fernandes sustainer (h.bucker version) requires a humbucking bridge pickup, is this true? Or could it work with a humbucker thats single coil sized, like SD Hot Rails?

Honestly, Tele's can be a pain in the arse :P

Looks like it would be enough of a space, but just because it looks big enough in the pic doesn't mean it will in real life. I'd say 70% sure it's big enough.

Thanks. I'll probably measure some stuff to make sure anyway.

Anyone know what size a normal humbucker is? Is a P-90 slightly bigger or smaller?

Not a clue I'm afraid. That's one thing they never mention when selling pickups - the dimensions. Maybe if you contacted places that sold the pickup you wanted, they'd be able to tell you.
