March 31, 2000 I went to see a Red Hot Chili Peppers/Foo Fighters concert. I was going mainly for the Foos but I like the Chili Peppers too so I figured the show'd be great. I looked up who was the opener and it was some band called Muse from England. I went to their website and checked out the song 'Muscle Museum'. I was surprised- this was seriously catchy! And infinitely better than the crap that was big at the time here in the states (Limp Bizkit, etc.) I was curious to see them live.
The concert day came and before Muse hit stage Dave Grohl came on the big screens overhead. He started rambling about how he was sick (drunk/wasted) and the Foo Fighters weren't gonna be playing. BUT he said we'd get to enjoy more Muse. Well- that didn't go over too well with the 20,000 or so in the arena and they already started booing. Then out came Muse a little while later and they ripped right into their set. I was blown away from the start. They only played a handful of songs off Showbiz (Sunburn, Uno, Showbiz, Muscle Musuem... I can't remember all the songs) but I was in shock. They were great. To my dismay, however, I was in the minority. People were actually booing them and throwing stuff at them. This could be just because they were angry about the Foo Fighters pulling out, or it might just be because they were idiot jocks who wouldn't know good music for anything. I'm guessing it was the latter. Anyways I felt really bad for Muse because they soldiered on and finished up, despite the totally undeserving verbal beating they were recieving. I actually thought they played and sounded better than the Chili Peppers that night, and they are rock veterans! Needless to say I bought Showbiz not long after and have been hooked since. Even imported OoS, The UK Absolution (for the bonus DVD), & some singles. I'm glad they're finally getting some recognition over here. They deserve it. I've seen them 3 more times since and will continue to as long as they play near me.

Woah that kicks arse.

I'd be annoyed if the foo's pulled out. Can you imagine muse coming and saying "Gah I'm too pissfaced to play tonight" at earls court? I'd be distraught!

Dave Grumbs, you should know better. tsk tsk. Did they ever come back to do the gig another night? That reminds me, when are muse going back to atlanta? Have they already done that?

I know Muse has been back to Atlanta once since the Matt Split face tragedy, though it was a Curiosa show. I was pissed at first the Foo Fighters cancelled but Muse more than made up for it. I don't believe Muse would ever pull a gig for partying too hard. They have a bit more integrity. Muse are so much better than the Foos anyways I'm actually glad they cancelled- I don't know if Muse really played any more than they would have that night, but I sure hope they did.

Offtopic... Yesterday I was watching Foo Fighters live at Rock In Rio, Lisbon (on TV)... You know that rock and roll stuff of spitting to the cameras? Dave did that... It was probably the worst thing I've ever seen in my whole life. God, it was disgusting. Awful. It had gallons of muck. If Matt did that, I believe it would be like Ali G Indahouse (remember?), ehehehe Kiddin.

Anyway, maybe they would have appreciated Muse a lot more if the Foos hadn't pull their gig.

If you were about to do a gig with 20,000 people you wouldn't get twatted off your head would you!?!?! Freeek.

"Split face" heheh.

You are so lucky! I wish I had gone to an earlier muse gig. I'd kill to see them in a small arena (was contemplating buying plane tickets to america just to see them in a small gig) or see them play old songs.

The next time I saw them here (in the states) was in Cincinnati in a club that was ridiculously small. It could only hold a couple hundred people and that was really pushing it. I'm sure the place violated some sort of fire code hehehe. Anyways it was unbelievable seeing them so close in such a tiny space- and so different from what they do nowadays in Europe. I mean I've seen footage of them at festivals and I own Hullabaloo so I know what an amazing thing it must be to see them in that kind of setting, but I did feel a bit spoiled seeing them in such a tiny bar. That'll be the last time I bet I get to see them that close up in such a tiny place.

hehe, in the states, they play ridiculously small places...
and over here, they're getting ridiculously big!!!
that was my first thought when i entered the earl's court arena... that it was just ridiculously huge!!!
oh, and i'd kill to see muse in a really small venue... i missed the club gig they did here on their pre-absolution club tour... and i'm still gutted!!!

Heck, all those bloody idiots who booed Muse, they should die. They don't know what good music is. or they're just too damn closeminded to realize that muse is the best band ever, even if they'd never heard them before. (okay, sorry, maybe i'm a little biased)

Saw Muse in LA in December. The club is pretty small. But after two sold out nights in a row in Los Angeles, I doubt they will be in such little places when they return to America in 2005! I feel really lucky to have seen them in such a venue.

I think Muse wud disagree with you there, there have been ocasions where they have been nervous (or just wanted to get wankered) and have come out drunk. Still having said that, they still played for the fans. The Foo's just cancelled!!!
