The Guardian newpaper is currently running a series called 1000 albums to hear before you die The albums are not ranked but appear in alphabetical order. According to the newspaper's website it's
Guardian online
not the best 1000 albums of all time. Instead, it's a cross-genre, cross-era look at some great music.
Muse are featured on that list with Black Holes and Revelations
Guardian online
Muse
Black Holes and Revelations (2006)

Some missed the sense of humour, others the politics (Assassin advocates knocking off politicians), but Muse's never-better songwriting shines like a supernova. Angry, flamboyant and unapologetically excessive, it's the best arena- electro-glam-pop-protest-rock space opera ever made. Wembley Stadium awaited them.

The criteria for compiling the list might also be interesting to read

It would have been more interesting to have done top 100 albums.

1000 could include pretty much any decent band..
Still gratz on the boys anyway!

That list is a joke... of course it's great that Muse made it (by the way, every band can only be listed with one album, that's why there's only one Muse album on there)...
I flipped through the list, looking for some artists that I'd definitely put on there... I mean Top 1000 albums and you don't find names like Bright Eyes, Counting Crows etc.???
No matter if you like them or not, they do deserve a mention, I mean come on, it's 1000!

Agreed list is usless. No Idlewild, are you having a laugh?

Well done to Muse though. I guess.

That's kinda nice. Who has time to listen to 1000 albums though?

Hmmm, just had a look at the list - they say they chose the less obvious albums, but imo they chose the most obvious every time. Absolution should have been the choice here - less obvious and a better album! Plus they chose The Bends by Radiohead, which is certainly not 'an album you need to hear before you die' ahead of the less obvious and far superior Kid A.

Also its a joke that Rachel Stevens is on the list and many of my other favourite bands and albums (Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory) weren't even there!

Thank God and cheers that Linkin Park, FOB, MCR, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion among many others did'nt make it.

Nice to see some surprises/of my favorites like Cat Powers, Suzanne Vega, Kruder & Dorfmeister, (of course), f'ng Muse (it does not matter what album since they are hit or miss with picking 1 best, 1 artist not so obvious alternative choice) among many others.

Where the heck is Poole, Orbital among many others (aiiiright not to see the likes of Pearl Jam since I am not a huge fan)?

What the hell The Killers' Hot Fuss, Bloc Party's A Weekend in the City, among many others doing in that list?

They should change the title of the list to

1000 artists to hear before you die and it's up to you to figure out the grave omissions & skip the bollocks that made it.

I think the reason BH&R is there is because while we all recognise OOS as the best (well, a lot of us do) that's only because we're bigger Muse fans... it's all because of commericial value. Sales, radio plays etc... and BH&R was much more commercially successful than OOS or Abso.

i'm quite happy that they've just called it 1000 albums to hear before you die

and not top 1000 albums ever

the choice of bh&r is puzzling.

Unfortunately thats true, its always about whats more commercial I also think OoS should have been there instead, but anyway, all Muse albums are awesome!!

why do people get so worked up about these lists? it's just a bit of fun, so what if band x didn't get on it?

i've actually quite enjoyed this list - it's given me an idea of where to start with a few artists i've always meant to get into (neutral milk hotel & boards of canada to name but two).

Good that Muse got in there, but it really shouldn't have been BH&R...it would have to be between OoS and Absolution.

When I read this I was thinking " Oh my god, Oos is in the 1000 "
But it's BH&R ... what a commercial choice ...
