oohhh, makes me wish I knew the difference, I'm looking forward to finding out over the summer which GNU/Linux OSs I should have have chose instead of ubuntu, mind you, I'll be happy if the spinny cube desktops will work with my graphics card

Ah, well, it's GNOME. KDE's too fiddly for my liking. But I like KDE apps because ... GNOME apps don't do anything.

physics is all gnomes so I kind of hope thats what I'll have when I finally pluck up the courage to install it properly (got the partitioning done  but scared of it going wrong and losing windows because that's where my lecture notes are ) but just looking down the list of programs from the add/remove programs tool I could see that all the ones that looked interesting/better were KDE based.

haha, back up everything you need then, stick it on a CD. and its safter to mess around with partition sizes in windows, you can hardly remove windows while running windows.
and if you have ubuntu, you will have gnome.
if you have kubuntu, you will have kde. cunning eh?

Im running about 43 processes at all times but everything in my tray with the exception of Anydvd is protection related(zonealarm firewall)AVG anti virus&anti spyware,Pc doctor,Spybot teatimer,spyware guard,winpatrol and windows defender-all of which barely make a dent in my memory.
