Sometimes I despair. Beginnings and ends are human concepts. We create the idea of a beginning to help us understand our complex changing enviroment. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can not be created or destroyed, it just changes form. This is the same for everything. Take Life for example, the carbon molecules are still there after death and still will be forever. It is just impossible for us to comprehend an infenite amount of time and so we create concepts to help us understand our enviroment.
Woah, try to hold back on the broad generalizations, there. Simply because something is defined by human beings does not mean it is invalid. Have you ever witnessed a beginning or end of time? There is evidence against such a perception, but there is not conclusive evidence invalidating it. Furthermore, historically many native cultures in Southeast Asia and the Americas conceptualized time as cyclical, and it was expressed as such in their everyday lives. This view seems to coexist with modern science, yet it is also a "human concept." So, do not despair, just keep an open mind and continue to observe while developing your own ideas .
You have to make generalisations inorder to stop writing pages and pages. I am not saying human concepts are all wrong but that we invented beginnings and ends and so that they are not a logical continuation of time.
P.S I wasn't saying that humans were falible in creating these concepts.

Quote Yup, Matt's Athiest, as a matter of fact, Thoughts of a Dying Athiest are all his own put into song.
Did we not establish that there was a quote found where Matt said that he never wanted to say that he was an athiest? And just because a good songwriter writes in a character, doesnt prove a thing about their real life. As with alot of the lyrics of their songs, its about ideas and searchings...

sorry if i offend anyone, but why belive in a teaching which says that there are only 144, 000 (or something close to that) people that will ever enter heaven throughout the entire lifespan of the human race? out of the billions of people that live and have ever lived, do you really think you'll ever have a chance?
i'm not a christian..i'm jewish so i'm not sure wut ur general thoughts are on heaven and hell but my ideas on wut hell is....it's not a fiery place where people who don't have "self control" or "sin" go to. doing a good deed and sinning is concerning the relationship with Gd...there are ups and downs with relationships, 1 doesnt get struck with lightening if 1 does s/t wrong, if a kid does somehting wrong the parent isn't going to strike him with a baseball bat and send him to a faraway island away from humanity. wer closer and sometimes drift from Gd but no matter wut he still loves us and thers the relationship, the uncondional love like a parent who also has to teach us.. so hell isn't a furnace wher we spend eternity, it's a place where we have to confront ourselves and the things we didn't try to prevent during our life so that we make our life in the world complete which is one of the most difficult things anyone can ever do when they have done something really wrong and then have to confront it. to admit to having commited something bad is so hard bec then we have to face ourselves and live with ourselves knowing that wer at fault but then we grow and love ourselves more from it which helps us love our creator more. bec the more we understand ourselves, the more we get closer to Gd. so i kno i'm not christian so maybe i shudn't be in this forum...but i just wanted to share that idea

My big question is, how did the earth go from having a few proteins in the sea to having amoebas? How did 'life' begin?
Well, the theory is, that a prokaryotic cell at a few other prokaryotic cells, but the cells slowly changed to work together inside that one prokaryotic cell, who then became a eukaryotic cell.
That's just the gist of the theory.
By the way, I am a proper Atheist.

I'd love to see that first twitch of life. That one cell that reproduced from which all other life on the planet is derived. Would be an amazing moment.

yer and what does everyone think of my theory of the fact that god created the world in 7days, when the 7days represent 7 periods in time because the bible and the evolution theory go in the same order and i think god created things but by letting them evolve etc. because definatly isn't bullshit becuse things are stil evolving and adapting etc.

Current theory is that life is really just replicating molecules. Not really impressive really, just us humans looking for self importance again.

I hope you're not suggesting that because Eoghan doesn't believe in God he's some kind of miserable git, because if I were him I'd find that offensive. I don't know why theists have so much trouble understanding why atheists aren't off hanging themselves at the soonest possible opportunity. Life is an amazing thing and to waste it being miserable all the time would just be stupid. To be frank, I think life is infinitely more wonderful when you don't believe in a God. I know I will cease to exist when I die, so I'm determined to make the most of the time I have.
Also, when you look at a beautiful sunset or something, what do you see? For me it is the result of billions of years of events that have all managed, by utter chance, to coincide and result in something stunning. It's something that was billions of years in the making, that will never be repeated in exactly the same way, something that I am priviliged to be seeing. How rubbish would that be if all I saw was something that God did. "God did it". That just sucks all the beauty out of it.

No, I'm not suggesting anything of the sort. It just seems a very bleak view point to take. I don't know where I stand on the whole God thing right now but I can say this. If we are just bags of chemical reactions and are alive only by coincidence can't we still find that amazing and beautiful? In fact, I find the possibility that this entire planet and all it's inhabitants are here today due to one huge coincidence even more amazing than the idea of a creator. I find it more mind blowing that a bag of chemical reactions could be capable of such hate and yet such love on their own than the theory that all this comes from God.
As I've said, I'm unsure of my standing on this topic. ( For background, I used to be a fairly strong christian but have come away from that in the past year) but those are just a few of my thoughts.
I'm very sorry if I've offended anyone and offer my apologies.

What is the chance of a sun making itself from from little chemicals? Not very likely, and it's incredible to think about it.
If god made it, then he just pointed at it and it existed. Big woop. let there be light. woo.
