Discussing God's name. Then we decided that seeing as god is dog backwards, then god must be a dog.

yes we did measure time but its not a constant. if you were to have two clocks left one on earth, and flew the other one millions of miles into space then over time the two clocks would show a different time, this is a fact.
another theory states that blackholes can bend time i think.

We base our time around the sun, so obviously if we are elsewhere in the universe time is going to be different!

He is right that time is malleable though. If you were right next to a black hole holding a clock, an observer would see the clock slow right down almost to a stop, but to the person holding it near the black hole, it'd be working fine. It's all to do with perception, and being tied up with space and all that jazz.

Still not quite sure what that has to do with God existing though. If He did create the universe just for us why didn't he make time a bit less complicated instead of all this space/time rubbish?

A response to some portions of Agg25's monster muselive post!

how did it come to this :
we were home grown by aliens

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you a scientologist.

Actually, I am reading some books (12th Planet) that give a lot of really compelling evidence to the fact that we were actually "home grown by aliens." It blows my mind how much evidence there is to support this idea! But yeah, the Scientologist version of that theory is completely ridiculously silly

LanceJammer :
Therefore, I simply try to live well and treat my fellow human with respect and kindness, which is really the basic idea behind pretty much every religion. I also pray to one God every night, even though I am not too positive that he may exist in the form that I speak to. But I believe that most faiths are all basically trying to describe the same phenomenon: That existence didn't just randomly appear out of nothing. So if it turns out that my one God is actually a bunch of Gods or a cow or a divine system of cosmic forces, I figure it really won't matter in the end.

Phew, thanks for reading!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty much same as me, treat people as you would like to be treated. I don't believe I need to speak to something to do that though. Life didn't appear out of nothing, read my earlier link. I think a lot of people pray out of fear, that if they don't they might not go to heaven, a bit like hedging your bets...just in case. Where it falls down again imo is, who is right? The people who worship the cow, the sun, Buddah, Allah??? And what about people who have been isolated from religion their whole life? How are they supposed to work out that there is a god they should be praying to? And what about a deaf/mute who hasn't been instructed to pray and follow "gods" teachings? Are they all damned to go to hell?
It just has more holes in it than swiss cheese.

You bring up a lot of good stuff here! I think I was a little unclear: I didn't mean to say that I don't believe existence came from "nothing", but that I don't believe it was created completely by random events, or without some guiding force.
I agree a lot of people pray out of fear (I love the lyrics to Fury!) myself included when I was younger. Nowadays, I pray so that I can constantly remind myself of what's important in my life (i.e. please look after my family, help me do the right thing, blah blah). I figure even if no on is listening, it's still a good thing to do every night.
Yeah, I agree with your last part. That's partly the reason that I feel all the religions are basically based off of the same thing... eh, yeah, hard for me to say much else here

LanceJammer :
B) Just because terrible things happen doesn't mean that God doesn't exist.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the same token then "just because good things happen doesn't mean there IS a god"
And the Noah story, how could anyone seriously ever have believed that, ffs! Hahaha.

I agree, and I didn't mean for my original point to be used as a proof that there IS a God. I just get a little upset at people who dismiss the idea of God because of bad things in life.
Surprisingly, there is a lot of evidence to support the idea that there really was a huge flood, and that there was a Noah-type figure in history. The books I am reading make an interesting point that if you read the Noah story with the assumption that there are multiple "Gods" instead of just one, it actually makes a lot more sense. I won't go into it, but I recommend those "12th Planet" books. Really interesting stuff! But yeah, it is definately too bad that it is so obviously incorrect in the Biblical version and that so many people take it to be.

PS. I'm not trying to dismiss your ideas... just making conversation

well the problem with religion is that it is so dogmatic. any physicist trying to make any claim has to have the maths to prove it. with religion you can handily skip and that say its "magical" or "divine" simply not understanding everything isn't a valid enough reason to worship an unknown enity that has had no direct physic contact with this planet or any of its inhabitants.

because if time can be bent then whos to say there was a begining of time. which could explain why god has always been there.
