Woke up halfway through the night with the ear being completely blocked up with something. It's not wax, there's none of that in there. But I can't hear properly now.

^Sounds like an infection. And ear infections hurt A LOT. At least that's what I remember when I had them as a child.

Yes, the pain's due to a build up of fluid. If you lie on your side and after a while the ear nearest the ground begins to hurt more then that's because the fluid has drained to that ear and increased the pressure inside which has caused the pain. You can either go to the doctor and see if he will prescribe you some antibiotics (probably not if you don't have really bad pain because the infection won't be particularly progressed) or just take paracetamol regularly (2 every 4 hrs up to 8 tablets a day) and wait for it to naturally pass.

It's not huge pain, no. It's bearable. It was worse last night before the ear went muffled.
I was gonna give it until Tuesday and then go and see the doctor anyway but do you think I should just leave it to naturally pass as long as the pain doesn't get worse?

Yeah, if it's not giving you too much grief I wouldn't bother going because in my experience they won't bother doing anything for you. If you've still got it after a few weeks you might want to pop along to check it isn't something else.

Thanks for the help and advice
I should have to pop into town anyway tomorrow so I think I might have a quick visit to the doctors (Or what I hope will be quick if you say they won't do anything for it) just in the hope they can tell me what it is for definite just to ease my worry.

Job applicaitons... 3 high powered job applications (big personal statements and long application forms) in the last 3 days and one more tonight is really killing me. I need a day off now and I guess it's lucky that I can have one as I don't have to stress about upcoming deadlines for at least a week now. Still, gotta keep putting them in - I really would like a job fucking soon.
I'm also having an annoying career vs get a job for a year and then do an MSc debate which I guess I can't really answer for myself. I would like to go into hydrogeology which requires the MSc but I've done 4 years of studying and frankly I can't really bring myself to do another year of it with the stress of the masters year (commonly described as the hardest work of the BSc, MSc, PhD trio). But, I'm never going to get into hydrogeology if I don't have the MSc so not doing one closes that off entirely and I'm left hoping that I can get a geologically based consultancy job which is proving INCREDIBLY hard. Basically... not sure what to do at this stage... also that's even presuming that I actually get onto the MSc...

I was in a similar situation. I went for a job I really wanted then didn't get it. So I did an MSc (which I'm just finishing) and hoping to reapply when the position opens again (yes there's only a couple of companies that do what I want to do), so the question is what to do until then...
Anyway I would say the MSc will be worth it even if you decide to have a slightly different career move

The thing with hydrogeology is that there's a massive surplus of entry level jobs (and that is honestly the case - I've seen so many on my current searches) so I wouldn't need a career change at the end of the MSc... it's just that my undergrad degree was an integrated masters so it makes me feel less inclined to be bothered with doing another one!

Well theres never a disadvantage of having an additional qualification, its just the time, experience and money you have to use that have to be taken into consideration. Where would you go to do it though?
|
|
|
Birmingham - there's only 2 (5 if you include related courses) in the UK, Brum and Sheffield and Birmingham's actually a place I considered for my undergrad, it's near home so I could commute and also has a more geological slant than the sheffield course which is more engineering based.
As for funding, I will hopefully get work this year which will be able to pay for most of it and then hopefully a career development loan should cover the rest if I need any.

|
|
I did my undergrad in Sheffield its an amazing city to be a student I miss it everyday. But I guess with MSc's you have to base them more heavily on your career aspirations.
|
|
|
I have nothing against Sheffield, I've been there quite a few times and it is a good city! Money and course sway me to Birmingham though. I might apply for Sheffield just in case.

I hate having access to the internet, it just makes me want to buy a bunch of stuff that I think I need but have no money to afford. It's been near impossible to get any kind of part-time job this summer. I've applied at so many places, never got hired. My crappy income at the moment comes from helping doctors update their databases at the hospital which only happens once a month.

Japan Legal System: Fucked?
My housemate has been in jail since Saturday morning for being unable to pay a taxi fare. A TAXI FARE. Apparently, in Japan, they can hold you for up to 23 days without conviction, without even attempting to convict you.
Our company is trying their best to sort stuff out and help him, asked us to pack some clothes for him - of which they took 2 t-shirts, 3 pairs of boxers and 3 pairs of socks, because the rest had printing or patterns on them, which are not allowed - cause he`s been wearing the same stuff since Sat. They didn`t even let him have a book, or the pencil and copy we sent.
On top of that, legally, only one person can visit him a day, for 30 minutes, and they must speak in a language that the guard can understand and no one in this station can speak English. My mate can`t speak Japanese though. So he has no idea what is going on and apparently isn`t doing too well. I asked my boss, who is taking care of the situation as best he can, if we can visit him. The police said they`d refuse us on the basis that we will speak English. They don`t seem to be even trying to provide a translator.
Where`s the embassy in all of this? No where to be seen. We rang them up on Sunday to report him missing and that`s how we found out he had been arrested. My boss knew before I had.
Apparently Japan has a 95% conviction rate. A guilty until proven innocent attitude. A "Well here you are in front of a judge, you MUST have done something wrong." attitude - which really defeats the purpose of having a bloody legal system in the first place. Anyone can be arrested on suspicion and held for 23 days. It`s wrong.
It`s just plain wrong.
Edit: And I`m really impressed I managed to only swear twice in that.
...the fact that it been chosen makes me thing it`ll be pants and were getting NSC 2. - Me, about Survival.

And I'm there at the minute. I completely agree with you too, it's an unbelievable city. But then, yeah, I guess you need to focus more on what's best for the career in your situation.

Holy crap, that sounds like an absolutely nightmare situation. It's made me scared to go to Japan now. I can't believe they can actually do that though, and just for a taxi fare too! :O

I just fucking hate it when I like an artist for a long time (usually not so big in the world yet) and suddenly I see the largest douchebags from school listening it on Spotify. And then they have their 'scoop' with; check out this new band blablabla...

Oh those people are idiots. Best thing to do is ignore and the second best thing to do is to make sure you know the B-sides and if you're ever in conversation with them keep dropping them in and watch their faces as they get more and more owned by superior music knowledge. Finish the conversation with 'oh, you must just be a more casual fan' and wander off.
