Muse is nowhere near Prog. When I think of Prog I think of songs that last over 10 minutes long, Noodley hard to play stuff, weird time signatures and lyrics about highly poetic and densely layered stuff or far off medieval worlds.
Muse does none of these things, Exogenesis is probably the closest they've ever come, but it ain't Yes or King Crimson.

Maybe since it is the first annual Progressive Music Awards, they just want some more bigger name bands to attract people to check them out.

Then Citizen Erased, Micro Cuts, New Born, Knights Of Cydonia and Butterflies And Hurricanes are punk rock or something like that?

I'm very confused by the whole 'register your votes' thing? I don't think the site is working.
And Guiding Light award what?

well how do you define progressive music? If i take the literal meaning of "progressive" like "going ahead" then i actually dont know any progressive music.
Time signature changes and scale changes happen in soo many music pieces it can not be called progressive in any way, so it has to be something else that is progressive in a song.

Is Muse win this award, then... I don't even know how to finish that sentence.
Yes, they have a slight prog influence, but it's like Muse being nominated for a Metal award because they have songs like Dead Star and SS. The hint is there, but that's about it.

Both Muse and Radiohead are hardly prog.

They're all just alternative rock. CE and KoC have prog elements.

Muse rules!
Hello .
Are they taking the piss by calling the other award 'Guiding Light'? That's hilarious!

Muse and radiohead are completely like prog-rock bands of the 70's and 80's. Prog wasn't just about daft time signatures and songs about 'floating on a wave whilst the nurse fetches the bill' (reference to Genesis there by the way). Prog was also abut pushing what instruments could do; which Matt does all of the time; look at how he uses midi etc to get almost dancey synth sounds out of a guitar.

Muse and Radiohead are proggier than Pink Floyd or King Crimson, IMO.
GOTCHA!
But I think their albums definitely have more conceptual vibes and prog-rock influences than most others in the alternative bracket show. They're not prog-rock, but they're progressive in a way, and that's what the awards are for, not outright prog-rock . . . unless I'm talking shit, which is also an option.

Initially visited this awards page after seeing it posted on Steven Wilson's Twitter, was quite surprised to see Muse listed at all. I used to think Muse had progressive elements to them, but after growing a better understanding of the genre these last few years I can say with certainty they don't belong in this competition.
somewhat off-topic and strictly speaking Wilson fans here: I had a tough time with the Guiding Light category, but in the end of course I went with Wilson. My other choice would of been Fripp but Wilson is still actively making music anyway, so in my opinion he's prog's current standard. I was also a little baffled by SW's Raider II being used in the Anthem category, I would of thought Deform To Form a Star much more suitable.

These are terrible shortlists.

In fairness, it's the prog awards. What could they do?
Chortle.

Prog rock is defined by 10 minute tracks. Neither Radiohead or Muse need apply.
