I'm sure Microsoft will move to blu-ray, but I'd also like them to do a ton more with digital sales. Imagine how nice it would be if you could pre-download a game like on a pc and just start playing at midnight

I'm not sure I'd like stuff to be focused on downloads next gen, for a number of reasons.

Not saying they should get rid of retail, they should do both. hopefully (but probably not) digital games could even be priced lower like PC games are

I wouldn't like it just because one my internet is rubbish and it would take ages for me to download stuff and secondly I like having a collection of my all my physical games.

I doubt they are going to stray away from physical games, I wouldn't be worried about that. Unless they come up with an extremely convenient way of doing it, I don't see it happening. Blu-ray seems like the right move for Microsoft, its almost like they need to have it. It's becoming the future of gaming and multimedia - they need that.

I cant even put in a 9 month old game into the PS3 without it needing a 1.2GB update, which seems to happen as my internet goes to a few mbps.

I think blu-ray as a storage device is obviously much better than DVD, but I think blu-ray is being increasingly outdated by cloud based storage. I could buy a blu-ray for $20 at best buy or a 1080p movie from apple for half of that, and have it be available pretty much everywhere. I personally don't think the leap from 1080p to blu-ray is worth more money and less accessibility. A lot of movies come with digital copies nowadays (for more $), but that's just one copy you get.

I would be furious if the next generation of consoles moved to digital only. Like absolutely livid. I fucking hate downloads. It grieves me that every time I put a game in that's a few months old there's a dozen updates for it. I put Littlebigplanet 2 in a month ago so I could see if there was any interesting levels online and I had something like nine updates that totalled hundreds of megabytes. I'd have been sat for an hour, and it would have eaten up my allowance, and in the end I just turned it off and played Skyrim.
Digital games would infuriate me. All I want is to go to ASDA on my way home, buy a game, pop it in and crack on.

Consumer Internet isn`t nearly fast enough to justify cloud storage or download only consoles. I love the idea of Steam and the likes but it is incredibly annoying having to wait hours for a download when I could just pop into town and buy it. It`s especially unfeasible if, as Pib has pointed out, you have a cap on your Internet downloads.
They`ll never successfully get rid of physical media, regardless of how much they want to. They stand to lose to much with regards consumers who just find the whole downloading thing a hastle. Which it is. Not to mention the incredibly infuriating fact that you need a credit card to buy anything off the internet and banks are being absolute cunts these days.
