Happy new year, one and all.
I have made this thread before in years past, but it seems more relevant than ever this year, so here it is again.
Since 2001, the years have been 'two-thousand-and', but we hear so much about the 'twenty-twelve' Olympics. The BBC can't seem to make their minds up tonight.
Is it time to stop?
(I could put something really funny and intelligent here, but that would just be showing off.)

Twenty-twelve. But in Dutch it's tweeduizendtwaalf (two-thousand-and-twelve), twintig-twaalf is just not right.

Twenty-twelve has a nicer ring to it but I just can't bring myself to say it over two-thousand-and-twelve for some reason. I dunno, maybe it feels too gimmicky.

It always has been a gimmick. The world went nuts when the year 1999 ticked to 2000. People had been talking about the year two-thousand lots, and that left a lasting impression, so 2001 was 'two-thousand-and-one'.
But that hasn't always been the way. It could quite easily have been 'twenty-oh-one', as 1901 was 'nineteen-oh-one'.
Looking back over the four-digit years, the rule has been to separate it into two two-digit numbers: 1066 is 'ten-sixty-six', 1824 is 'eighteen-twenty four' etc. It's only the millennium hysteria that has caused us to say it differently. But having done so for eleven years, it seems kind of odd to stop. As it defies the old rule, no one knows where we should stop!
Just the other day, on the news there was a segment on time capsules, and they spoke about it one being opened in 'two-thousand-and-fifty'.
