I don't know, but you can prevent yourself from showing up in someone else's Facebook suggestions.

I had the same thing with LinkedIn a few weeks ago, it suggested someone who was my friend when we were kids and who who also went to the same secondary school as me, but we haven't talked to each other in almost 10 years, we have no friend in common, we have never even e-mailed each other. I really don't understand how LinkedIn knows that I knew this person And I really, really hate the thought of her seeing my name in her email inbox too.

Facebook is suggesting someone as a friend who I worked with at uni 5 years ago. We don't have any friends in common, I never even knew his last name, he's Italian, and now FB is suggesting him as a friend. FB probably connected my email address to his, can I disallow FB to break into my email account and see who's in there?

I don't think thats how it works! Perhaps Facebook saw you were at the same university (if its listed on both your pages or maybe even from the email address domain names themselves) and just randomly suggested him.

There might be an option to search for friends using an email account, but that would have to be initiated by you, with your address and password requested by FB.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Facebook can look at your contacts without having your details, at least with some email providers.

^Just had a quick search about this and it does seem a bit dodgy. There are a few stories of recommendations appearing with the only explanation being that they searched for you first but didn't add. So in a way, some of your recommended friends are the people stalking you =s

BUT there are some people who have created fake accounts to test the friends recommended based on limited information like just an email address or phone number, with results still coming up. There was also suspicion over the phone apps using your contacts on your phone.

I thought there was an import contact feature in facebook needing authorisation but it looks like it could be doing that anyway with certain profile information...

I've deleted all info about me from by FB page, it doesn't know where I live or study or anything. But maybe it already saved that data. But this Italian guy doesn't have any info about his school/uni either, at least not as far as I can see (I'm not his "friend"). And I only ever said I went to uni in Nijmegen, I never specified my course or degree.

So I don't think it can connect us via the university thing, the only other option is email. And I don't think he'd know my name, and I believe I have disabled the option for people trying to find me, so he can't have searched for me on FB.

^I guess it depends on the email provider, like Ash0Man said. I haven't really kept up with facebook's changes, but then again it changes so quickly its hard for anyone to do that!

And it probably has already saved that data. Or maybe I'm feeling overly paranoid after reading all that privacy stuff...

I have a regular hotmail account, I've always had that and it's probably not very safe . I vagely remember FB asking if they could connect with my email account, I don't remember what I did, but I can't imagine I'd allow them to do that...

I'm getting paranoid reading about FB and privacy, I'd go mad if I knew anything else about the internet.

Something's gotten into me... I've been deleting loads of 'friends'. Including MLers, please don't feel offended. I hate sharing so much with so many people. I want to keep my FB limited to the people I know or have known.

I only delete people on their birthdays, because that's when I realise about their useless existence in my friends list.

A lot of the cases of people popping up as friend suggestions despite no obvious link is because they have visited your profile on a number of occasions.

I love that. My friends and I post quite a lot about football, usually it's Celtic v Rangers games that start it all off, and the banter can quickly descend into a full scale verbal argument. See, I love winding up the opposition, it's one of the best things about sport. But as soon as it turns into an actual argument? I get the popcorn and just sit and watch. I saw one of my mates getting into a full-blown religious debate the other night. That was fun to watch, mostly because I was in total agreement with my friend and he was taking this really, really mental Christian guy to school. I have removed/blocked a few people because of football related posts though. Some people just take it too far.

I've also been removed from friends lists for stuff like that. Some irritating bitch posted one of those horribly contrived 'artistic' photos, I think it was of a Starbucks cup and a book (in sepia, obviously), and I commented saying I thought it was boring and, well... contrived. She then exploded at me for attacking her 'art' and 'passion'. Pathetic, really. I quite like photography as an art form as well. Just not when it's nonsense like that.

But yeah, I enjoy Facebook arguments. They make it a bit more interesting than the usual 'X FACTOR OMG' or 'I am neverrrr drinking agaiiinnnnn ' drivel.

New weird facebook update with the timeline. I don't like it. I might try going without facebook for a month or so. The chat function and posting videos is all i really use it for. I use twitter often enough now that people i know other than muselivers actually use it. I like google plus, but hardly anyone uses it. Maybe that will change.

I guess i could get used to the new format and I like the ablity to choose a cover, but i hate the looking back in time thing. I don't see why anyone wants to put their old baby pictures on facebook, or whats to look at what I did 2 years ago because I don't want to. I'm not that person anymore. I don't even feel like I'm the same person as last year. I don't even post anything about my life, it's usually about sports or a recent funny TV show. I only use the chat function to talk to a few people I'm close friends with anyway. I don't want people in college trying to creep at what I was like in high school because it should be of no interest to them.

I kind of like the timeline too, but I never really posted a lot of statuses and I don't do it at all now.

And I didn't even think about going back in other people's timelines to see what things they used to post? That's actually a good idea.
