Hats off to you. I agree. What's wrong with The Resistance guys? It's a real show of talent.
It's a messy collection of songs going in too many directions in terms of style and influence, with only a few moments of above-average material scattered around. I love Muse too, but you have to admit that compared to anything else they've done, from Showbiz to Black Holes, it's certainly not a show of talent. At least not the talent we all know Muse is capable of having.

I would say it's better than BHaR and probably also Absolution, but it's not good.

I must be the only person who wants them to make the stage designs as bombastic as possible without posing a threat to anyone's safety

So, BHaR and Absolution are terrible?

They're not terrible, just outrageously average.

They could be hanging from wires attached to their nipples for all I care, as long as they play Showbiz/Muscle Museum/Escape again.

I wish I could stop immediately picturing everything I read in my head.
And Absolution isn't average.

Absolution is their weakest album
And Muse should make the most outrageous stage design known to man. I want them to dwarf U2's 360 Tour.

I'd probably say The Resistance is their only 'average' album, because that's basically what it is. An average rock album (bar exogenesis).
BHaR had songs (Hoodoo, City of Delusion and Map of The Problematique to name 3) which are different, but also fantastic.
Absolution was a quality album, having hard material like Stockholme Syndrome and Hysteria, but had a soft balance with Ruled By Secrecy and Falling Away With You.
Origin, well, that album speaks for itself.
Showbiz is fucking awesome, shut up, all of you.
The Resistance to me just seemed like a regurgitation of Queen, pop rock and anthem themes. It was a fairly forgettable album for me. The only songs I really listen to are Resistance, MK Ultra and Uprising. Occasional appearance of Exo 1.

Thing with the Resistance is that although there are some genuine highlights, MK Ultra being the standout for me, the lows are much lower than on previous albums.
BHAR is my penultimate worst Muse album, but however the lows on the album are all still pretty good comparably. I'd take Invincible of IBTY or Soldiers Poem over Undisclosed Desires any day of the week.
Also the high points on BHAR are much much higher than on the Resistance. For me, the one two sucker punch of Origin and Absolution will be their golden age unless they really pull it out of the bag now, which I'm not sure they will. I just want a consistently good and 'simpler' album and approach really, doesn't have to be world changing.

I'm going to make a bold prediction that in the next year we'll hear stories about how:
1. It sounds more like their older stuff. Stripped down, less stadium.
2. Some allusion to how it in some way resembles Origin.
3. It's their heaviest, but also softest album.
4. It's the best album they've ever done. Their most complete album.
5. Descriptions of strange instrumentation, and how they've experimented.
And then the fans on here will get it into their heads that the album will be:
1. A blazing rock album.
2. A really experimental concept album.
3. Just like Dark Side Of The Moon but Musey.
And then we'll hear it and it will be:
1. A couple of poppy songs.
2. A couple of straight forward rock songs.
3. A couple of shit songs that almost everyone hates.
4. Fuck all like everyone had hoped.
Which will lead to:
1. Loads of people complaining on Muselive about how Muse are shit now.
2. Loads of people complaining on Muselive about people complaining on Muselive about how Muse are shit now.
3. Some people saying it's the best album they've ever done only to change their mind after three months and declare Muse dead to them.
Sweepstakes.
I do hope it doesn't end up like this... At least a step back to BHaR would be nice, but sadly I doubt they'll ever be as good as they were Showbiz/Origin era... I say bring back the shrooms and let Chris/Dom write more. Especially Chris.
Also, Lol @ the producer thing xD
And agreeing on the fact that The Resistance is average. The other albums all worked well but The Resistance is a little messy, hoping for the next album to be a little more focussed, and a lot more guitar based. Or tasteful piano-ing (Butterflies style).

Yikes, you don't really know what you're going on about eh?
Pib has it spot-on. With Muse on Warner for what, like 3 more albums, and the success of the last tour, we're getting exactly what we got with The Resistance. Why do you think they cleared out a bunch of the Origin tracks this year?

How did people get that nonsense into their heads? I thought it was made clear Resistance would be nothing like it from the start?

If I believe what is written on this site, I'm clearly the only person in the world who liked The Resistance...It just sounded to me like a band who're trying new things; some things worked, somethings maybe didn't for you - but so what? If you don't like it, don't buy it and don't whinge about your favourite band selling out! So they are able to make more than a decent living now from their music - well fantastic. That's why they are still doing it! Every one of their albums has just been an evolution from the previous one. Absolution was the next logical step from Origins and Black Holes was from Absolution. The Beatles didn't do 6 albums of I wanna Hold you hand and Hard days night, they moved on and did some really brilliant stuff. I'd love to think that in a parallel universe there is a Beatles forum where fans are howling about how Sergeant Pepper is crap because it used too much brass. Why haven't they just done another version of Twist and Shout! It's the same thing with Muse, too much synth, and why haven't they done another version of Origin (which of course has no synths on it at all anywhere...no, no it doesn't - for the record at least 8 of the 11 tracks are full of synths).
For the record I loved Origin, and Showbiz, oh and Absolution and Black holes too. Take a Bow (the most synthy song to date) is still my favourite ever Muse song. I saw Muse play twice in a pub in Leicester in 1999 and, to me, they are still that band. I've seen them play live around 18 times since then in venues ranging from the Charlotte, De Montford Hall right up to Wembley Stadium and despite them playing "the safe setlist" they are always, and by a long shot, the best live band I have ever seen.
Hats off to you. I agree. What's wrong with The Resistance guys? It's a real show of talent. Matt created 'Exogenesis Symphony' and it came out beautiful. If you prefer more of a rocky style, listen to MK Ultra and Unnatural Selection. If you like more synthy stuff, then you'll probably like the first few tracks.
Personally, I think Muse could write a song for children and it would still come out awesome. Sure, Origin is my favourite, but they're different people now. Remember how they were off their heads on mushrooms whilst recording that? Now Chris is married and his wife is pregnant with their sixth child, Matt's a new father and Dom......is....on the way to maturing. Of course they're not going to write a completely crazy album.
But I think the thing is with Muse, is that you cannot predict their next move. Each album is different. We didn't expect Plug-In Baby after Unintended. We didn't expect Supermassive Black Hole after Endlessly. We didn't expect Undisclosed Desires after Hoodoo. Muse are original, and I think we should trust in them to do what they feel is right. It's going to be wicked
And, yeah, that's my opinion.
I completely share your opinions. And you both put it into words beautifully.
And at least now we have a whole year of rumours and speculation to look foward to

Maybe because they said it would have their heaviest track ever on it? I don't know.
