Muse have topped an NME poll to decide the best ever Glastonbury performance, with their 2004 headline set on the Pyramid Stage.
Our online poll invited fans to vote by rating classic moments from the renowned festival out of 10. The 2004 Muse show came out top, following 20,000 online votes in 24 hours.
Muse saw off fierce competition from the likes of Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Blur, David Bowie, Pulp and Stevie Wonder.
Speaking to NME at the time, Muse’s Matt Bellamy said: “I think it's probably one of the best gigs we've ever done. It was definitely the biggest gig of our lives. Yet I didn't have any moments of doubt. I was unusually calm before the gig. It felt good!”
Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis says: "People were sceptical initially about Muse as headliners. They were a bit: ‘McCartney, Oasis, Muse? Hmmm.’ But it was like: ‘You watch!’ And it really blew people's minds. It was the best performance of that year. Everyone in that audience was like, 'What is THIS?' And so it was like probably the ultimate booking."

Nice, it really was an amazing gig.
|
|
|
I really never get tired of watching/listening to that performance.

I haven't seen most of the other performances, but Muse's in 2004 was amazing and I'd say as deserving a winner as any.

Radiohead 2003 is the only thing that I'd put above it.

|
|
Another victory for Muse. Radiohead are you even trying?

Every word of that story just made me happy.

Hell yes!
I've always, ALWAYS said that this is their best ever performance, especially Stockholm Syndrome, which is by far their best live performance of any one song, imo. It makes the whole Glasto 04 performance what it is.
I'm SO fecking happy they won for their 2004 set . If I could travel back in time, that would be the night I'd go back to... I would have killed to be there.
Well done, lads!

People who say Muse's 2010 performance was better make me sick.

Paul McCartney was still better.

Totally agree!
Although, i'd probably replace Stockholm Syndrome with Time is Running Out in your sentence.

Muscle Museum is the greatest song ever created.

I've never seen any live performance that's topped Stockholm at Glasto 04 so far. It's 'epic' personified. The song itself was amazing, but THAT four-minute outro made it all the more spectacular. From Chris practically jumping into the crowd (while still playing bass!) to Matt sitting on the drums/amp to the riffs themselves... bloody amazing.
I will forever bemoan the fact that it was left off the Abso DVD - what the fuck?! I don't care if it was some BBC copyright issue, that's bollocks.
TIRO wouldn't be half as brilliant without the shuffle dance

Have to say though, Bliss at Earl's Court would also be up there - the first and best Bliss falsetto!

I think I actually liked Earl's Court Stockholm better. Just a little. The chorus and ending of the actual song just did it for me.
I was pretty disappointed of Stockholm and Citizen not being on the DVD, but I found a full length recording of Glasto and loved every second of it.

I didn't really like the end of Stockholm at Earls Court - he screws up the scream, or if he did that on purpose, it's just weak, like some Blink 182 shit... the full bodied scream at the end of Glastonbury just raises the hairs on the back of the neck.

Was it a BBC copyright issue? I mean they let 13 of the 15 other songs on the performance onto the DVD.
I thought that they wanted it (the Glastonbury part of the DVD) to end on Blackout as a tribute to Doms Dad - he dropped dead on site soon after they walked off stage.
Speaking of Blackout at Glastonbury...

You did not just say that.
I'm sorry, taste & colours and all that, but that omission of the first I wish I could + the three piece scream... Best ever.

I know everyone bums this gig so I'm just going to have to be the unpopular opinion. I thought it was... alright. Bit of a ho hum set if you ask me (although much better than todays standards).
I certainly think they've done much better gigs. I was never sure why Glastonbury got that much attention from the Muse crowd.
One of lifes mysteries I suppose.
Oh, and Pulp were better.

I can't really explain it, but to me it's the most "flawless" gig as far as musical performance goes. It isn't the most energetic set (it was actually quite lethargic performance wise, not much jumping about or random Matt yelps, except at the end of Stockholm), but it just seemed that they hit every note, everything seemed to be on key.
I think the band just put everything they had into sounding right, to the detriment of the actual spectacle. Alot of the time Matt seems to keep his voice in check. Take Ruled by Secrecy, in that last chorus, in every other performance i've heard, both in person and in video/audio recordings he almost seems to "lose control" of his voice for a lack of a better term, but here he reins himself in. Ditto with Time is Running Out, every other performance he goes mental with his singing just putting everything he has into it, but once again it's controlled and tempered so it sounds great, almost like the Album version.
I find the DVD quite boring to watch, but the audio I can listen to over and over and over till the cows come home. I'm sure Muse could sound like they did at Glastonbury 2004 every night, but Matt would probably hang himself out of sheer boredom.
That's just my rambling thoughts, which probably made no sense.

Great gig It deserves top spot or thereabouts.
