Muse have teamed up with the Featured Artist Coalition, the Music Managers Forum and mobile association the GSMA to take part in the launch of a band mobile app development contest. Alongside Faithless, Metric and Eliza Doolittle, the band have submitted a brief for developers who want to have a chance to build a new Muse app.
The competition is open now and the winner (and runners up) will be announced at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona in February 2011.
For more information on how to apply and to download the competition brief and assets, click on the link below.

Didn't it say you could download the stuff to do it? Or did I misunderstood?

Seeing as the tour is almost over, are there really that many shows to choose from?

Yep, something like that.
It says: "registrer to download the brief and assets"
The "brief" is a pdf doc with tips to make the app. This: http://www.mobileappchallenge.com/uploads/muse/muse_brief.pdf
They also provide some "assets" which we can use within the app.

So basicly, they've realised that they might not have the best app in the world and now there trying to get someone to make a better one for them for next to nothing.
I don't want to register just to download the brief really.

I don't know how to design the apps.. but this will be surely interesting.. ^^

If I only have enough tech knowledge to make one, then I would be on my ass the whole day, in front of the computer designing it. Crap.

Muse would probably be better off paying someone a fairly small amount to make this for them. All that will happen now is they'll hardly get any submitions and they might end up not using any of the ideas.
It seems like a fairly simple app to make though; for people who didn't read the brief, you basicly have to make a frontend for a bunch of data on .mu and let band members push content like video, photo and status updates to the app through a cms. the users have to be able to do all the usual social network type stuff like post to facebook twitter and myspace and thats about it.
You could probably find 99% of the code that you would need for this on the internet since all the stuff it needs to do is pretty standard; most of the functionality of the cms would be done by third parties, all of which have fairly readable documentation along with examples for there api's.
Obviously you could do some semmy interesting stuff with a gui for this; perhaps some form of building that you walk around in and each room that you can enter contains content? I remember seeing a twitter app that did something like this and it seemed to go down quite well.

I think that that is the point of the app competition. Yes, they could just get a professional to do it who has little or no interest in the band's music to do the job, or they could open it up to the computer whizz kid fans. They need a good bit of fan relations work after the lack of setlist balance, and I think that it's a good idea.

I see where you're coming from, but this is sort of a weak attempt.

Does anyone know if it's only for Iphone or is it for Android too? Or both?

i just got my app-making stuf on going ;)
Edit:
Now that I realize how dam hard it is to make an app that covers all of the conditions they wanted I give up.
I'm looking to pay someone who is more knowledgeable, is it worth it?
