I think the way the audio levels are recorded takes it off the consideration of being a classic album. You know the "loudness wars". Fix that and BH&R will be a contender.

what was this sound problem in a nutshell??? i'd of thought a high end sound system would sort most things like that? I agree with ya pib that soldiers poem stands out badly on the album and invincible was cheese, if only glorious n eternally missed were used! Then it would be a classic!

Pib :
I think it's their third best album. It also gets bonus points because it's one of only two Muse albums to actually push them into a new direction, I think, Origin being the other.

The start of the album is strong - Take A Bow introduces you to the new sound of the band with the ridiculous (and awesome) dance beat before kicking in. Starlight I've never had a problem with even though a lot of fans hate it. Supermassive Black Hole continued their new experiment with dancier music, and Map took it a step further with a stronger, electro feel.

The end of the album is quite strong too. Exo-politics I always thought was underrated. It's nothing fancy and it doesn't try to be. City of Delusion starts the three Spanish influenced tracks and is one of the better songs they've made in recent memory. Hoodoo is the song that most sounds like the old stuff, I think - a fine example of how Muse can do a slow, or piano led song that isn't stupid or cheesy. And Knights of Cydonia was... well, ridiculous. But at least it was fun.

The only thing that really holds it back, for me, is the three songs in the middle being fucking awful. Soldiers Poem kills the albums flow - it sticks out like a sore thumb and is so appalling lyrically, that I can't see any justification for it being on the album at all. Invincible was their first really cheesy song and comes off more like 'Westlife does rock' than anything else. And Assassin sounded great when it was played at gigs before the album release, but was completely nerfed when they polished up the production and took out the awesome breakdown.

If it wasn't for losing so much ground in the middle, I'd think a lot more highly of Black Holes and Revelations. Classic though? No.

This sums it up really well, BHaR has some of my top 10 Muse songs on it. Unlike Pib, I don't mind Soldier's poem or Assassin that much. But Invincible annoys me. It was a sign of things to come, alas. It's a really good album, but not a classic.

I have a lot of love and affection for this album, i still listen to it lots.
soldiers poem and invincible let it down slightly, they weren't muse's finest hour.
But hoodoo, MOTP,take a bow and knights of cydonia more than make up for them.

also i feel bhar was muses first album to have tracks that really worked better live than on cd, take a bow being one! it just never seems to grab me while i've got it on the headphones, live it's a killer!

I think it's an awesome album, and always have. I think that there are many awesome songs, that i can listen to again and again. MOTP, Knights, TaB, Starligt, COD and SMBH (wich is an awesome live song!). These songs are among my favourite muse songs. But i still think that Abso and OOS are awesome albums as well.
They're just different kind of albums, and they also has their great moments. But BH&R being a classic? Maybe in my book, yearh.

It's a pretty good album. Not my favorite Muse album, but I really do like it. It was also the first album I heard, back in '06 or '07, so it did get me into the band. Although I listen to songs form the other albums more, I still love Take a Bow, MotP, Hoodoo, and Knights and listen to them quite alot. A classic? Maybe not yet, but I love it.

Well no. I liked it from the very fort time i heard it. Off course some songs were late bloomers fr me, like COD and Hoodoo. But i liked the album for the start.

i would of loved to like bhar from the off but songs like invincible and starlight just didn't cut it for me, although i must say starlight works very well live in big crowds its just not what i like to hear on a muse album.

Massive bump.

Been listening to it and to me its pure classic. Soldiers Poem is the only weak song, all the others are classic muse type songs and just quite frankly more rocking than the resistance.

It'll always be close to me, 'cause it was the first Muse album I heard. KOC was the first song I ever heard (Teo showed it to me), and Starlight was the song that really got me into them. Map of the Problematique is my second favourite Muse track, and it does have a lot of kickass songs. But right now it's way too recent to be considered a classic, and a couple of songs does let it down.

Maybe after another couple of albums I'll look back at it, and think differently of it. But right now? No.

...And then I said; Oatmeal, are you CRAZY?!

Well. Both yes and no. It's special to me since it's my favorite. Also studio-wise I think it feels like their peak. From Showbiz and on they got better with each album. I started listening pre-Absolution. When they released Absolution that was great excitement cause it topped their previous two. Then they released Black Holes and Revelations and topped again. Then they released The Resistance. A good album but first album where they haven't topped the previous one. So in that way it does kinda make Black Holes and Revelations a classic. But then again. I wouldn't say it has that "special" Muse sound.

To me Origin, Abso and BHAR are classics. I'm sure TR will be after this tour/when they release the next album. Depends on what the new stuff sounds like really

That always seems to happen. People get used to the certain sound of a band/album, that when it changes it's automatically deemed "not as good", just because it's different. (A pet peeve of mine is actually people saying like "new-so-and-so is so much worse than old so-and-so. They should totally do another album like ______." <-- if you want to listen to THAT sound, listen to THAT album. /rant...sorry) IMO, the bands that really stick around past one or two albums are the bands that try to expand their sound, and do different things. Muse = one of those bands.

I think BHAR is definitely a 'classic'. There are so many songs on there that I just can't imagine NOT listening to.

In all seriousness though. I don't understand how it could be a classic. It's four years old, isn't particularly critically acclaimed, and in all likeliness will disappear into the depths as a relatively unknown album.
