The way I see it, the only way of keeping both the casual fans and the hardcore happy is to play an extra 2 - 3 songs per gig - which isn't that much to ask considering how much everyone is spending on these gigs, particularly those who are going to multiple shows.

The current setlist isn't bad per se. In fact, lots of people on this forum have loved it. But it's just missing that something extra which would make the gig from a standard (tempted to use boring, but that feels a little harsh) one to a great one for the hardcore who have seen them live several times already.

The extra 2 - 3 songs could be slotted in during the main set, or maybe as Encore 1 (with the current encore as Encore 2). And the important thing isn't so much that these are ultra rare songs, the main point is that they're rotated (e.g. CE, Showbiz, Bliss for one night, and then Muscle Museum, Dead Star, Bliss on the following night) . That maintains an element of surprise.

I'm sort of hoping the band will throw the old "play the whole album in order" curveball into the mix once they hit the UK. I don't think anyone was expecting that on the BHaR tour when they did it in Nottingham (I think) and Wembley 2 (which was awesome. even though I knew what song would be up next). Unlikely, but I can hope.

The other thing I don't get is why some people are moaning that there are people (myself included) who are unhappy with the setlist. It's constructive criticism for a band that we all love. I've seen comments about how we shouldn't moan and just let people who have been to the gigs to enjoy it. But how are we stopping them from enjoying themselves at the gig? It's not like we're saying you shouldn't be enjoying it and be happy about being at the gigs so far. It's objective, constructive criticism. I know I'll still enjoy going to the gigs on this tour, but at the same time, I know the band can, and should, do better than what they're offering at the moment.

I love how Muse are becoming more and more creative in setlist making, especially in the unpredictability and variety of songs played [/sarcasm].

No seriously, I think the setlist is strong, but I just think it could get even better. I just hope I get the chance to hear Cave live.

But I still remember listening in 2007 to the audio of a gig in Adelaide, Australia and I still envy that setlist.
Damn, they even got an instrumental of The Groove! And Citizen Erased, Dead Star, Fury, Ruled by Secrecy, Hyper Music riffs...

OK, i feel i need to say something. Im usually not sympathetic to the setlist complainers, who complain when there are two shows with the exact same setlist, or vaguely similar setlists. This goes for any band i'm a fan of, Muse, Radiohead, Wilco, anyone. I usually think let the band play what they want, as long as theres at least variety.

But this is ridiculous. Four shows, with a total of what, 19 different songs? They have Five Albums! For christ sake, this is the best live band in the world, and they can't even play 20 different songs over the course of four shows? Ive seen bands with 3 albums play more than 20 songs in one show. Whats even the point of keeping a frequency tracker when the same exact songs are played every show? it doesn't take a genius to figure out each songs percentage will be 100%.

Listen, i still love muse, im just worried that they are slacking. Seriously, their shows are quickly going downhill. Whats the fun of going to a show if you know EXACTLY what will happen? I would actually have to consider whether or not i would want to see muse when they hit the states if their setlists remain this static.

agreed 100%

but hey i mean this is just the beginning of the tour so it might be a little sketchy, but if it continues like this for the rest of the tour then i will be very disapointed and sad

i dont think they'd have to make the set longer to satisfy both casual and hardcore fans.. just a little bit of rotation on some of their older songs to keep that surprise.. and maybe also rotate a bit between some of the newer that arent musts... like guiding light could be switched with mk ultra or something.. or map of the problematique with invincible/hoodoo/assassin or something

anyway.. can only agree on everything else you say.. would love to be at a gig with them playing The Resistance from Uprising to Redemption!!

I think, if the tour stays like this all the way through, it'll probably mean I won't be attending any more album tours.

the BHAR tour setlist was awful, although... i think it was just the actual gig I went to that sucked. They seemed pissed off and bored on stage so i guess that didnt help.

I'll save my money for special gigs like earls courts and royal albert hall gigs etc

The best song on the album, in my opinion, isn't even being played (MK ultra)... and yet... undisclosed desires is... which is nothing more than a joke of a song...

agh i dno... i am one unhappy muse fan atm

here's what i'd say would be a decent variety yet also realistic.. i've used the setlist they've played the last 2 gigs.. the slashes indicate the possible replacement-song:
01. Uprising/Take a Bow
02. Resistance
03. New Born/Butterflies and Hurricanes
04. Map of the Problematique/MK Ultra
05. Supermassive Black Hole
06. Guiding Light/Invincible
07. Interlude + Hysteria
08. United States of Eurasia
09. Cave/Unintended/Showbiz
(09. Citizen Erased/Micro Cuts/Megalomania/TSP)
10. Undisclosed Desires
11. Starlight
12. Plug In Baby/Bliss
13. Time Is Running Out/Sing For Absolution
14. Unnatural Selection/New Born
--- Encore ---
15. Exogenesis Part 1: Overture
16. Stockholm Syndrome/Unnatural Selection
17. Knights of Cydonia/Stockholm Syndrome

This.

I made two changes though, Take a Bow should be considered as an opener (which would push Uprising to second) and Citizen Erased/Micro Cuts should be considered for slot 9 or 10 if they play 18 songs. We'll call that the rare track slot - seriously it would excite everyone so much if we knew there was going to be at least one special, out of the ordinary song during the gig.

But apart from that, swapping some songs around like you suggested would be brilliant.

This is The Resistance tour. There is no way they are going to not play Undisclosed Desires, Unnatural Selection, Uprising and Resistance (since these will all likely be singles). You probably should also expect 2 or 3 other songs from the album every night as well. I'd expect at some point Guiding Light and USoE (sadly) will be swapped out for IBTY and MK Ultra... that's about it.

This would be good, and COULD happen:

1. Uprising
2. Resistance
3. New Born / B&H
4. Map of the Problematique / Invincible
5. Supermassive Black Hole
6. Guiding Light / MK Ultra
7. Interlude + Hysteria
8. United States of Eurasia / I Belong to You
9. Cave / Showbiz / Citizen Erased
10. Unintended / Feeling Good / Sunburn
11. Undisclosed Desires
12. Starlight
13. Plug In Baby
14. Time Is Running Out / TSP / S4A
16. Unnatural Selection
Encore
16. Exo 1 / Exo 2 / Exo 3
17. Stockholm Syndrome
18. Knights of Cydonia

sorry for the long quote, but THAT setlist above is the most reasonable thing ive ever seen. well done, sir!

This is the best setlist they could do, ever with the songs they have written until now:

1. Uprising
2. Dead Star (for those of you who play guitar or bass, you know how well the end riff of Uprising matchs with the dead star riff, it would be PERFECT, fucking perfect)
3. MK Ultra
4. Map of the Problematique
5. Stockholm Syndrome (I've always thought Motp ending was perfect to chain with Stokcholm Syndrome)
6. Citizen Erased
7. Hoodoo (the overture on piano would be just fucking awesome with citizen erased ending on piano)
8. Eternally Missed (I think Citizen Erased, Hoodoo, and Eternally missed are kind of a trio songs sharing a lot as of their themes)
9. Resistance
10. Showbiz
11. Unintended
12. I Belong To You (+ Mon coeur s'ouvre à ta voix)
13. Undisclosed Desires
14. United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)

ENCORE

15. Guiding Light
16. Plug in Baby
17. Knights of Cydonia
18. Unnatural Selection

ENCORE 2

19. Exogenesis part I
20. Exogenesis part II
21. Exogenesis part III

It's 20 songs, with all the Resistance album and it could be very easy for them to make such a setlist, I wouldn't mind if they were playing this same setlist for 6 months, this is the kind of setlist that they should do, this is ambitious and got lots of their best songs.

Dead on. Muse are playing a very average set atm which could be repeated countless times over the course of the tour. This one could be repeated also countless times, but it'd be awesome.

Oh, and guys, don't go off topic, there is a thread for dream setlists already.

I began to wonder if the setlist is hard to change due to light programming and so on. Albeit I wonder if it culd be that hard to swap around a bit. :P

It's certainly possible, with the amount of effort Muse puts into the light shows / visuals / etc. To me, that's a charming thing about Muse, is that they try to be the best of all worlds. Not only do they put on a good live show from a musical standpoint, but they do so from a theatrical standpoint as well. Especially with the complicated (but awesome) visuals of the "floating cubes" they're doing on this tour.

It makes me wonder about them shooting their next video for Undisclosed Desires. You would think, since Uprising has been out since August, that it's getting close to time to release UD. Hopefully they'll have an accompanying video at the same time... but will they have any time at this point? They're solidly touring until December.

Unless they completely outsource it, and make a video that doesn't show the band at all (a la Hysteria).

Wash me away, clean your body of me. Erase all the memories, that only bring us pain.

i dont think its the lights, i guess its the visuals/videos that kinda affect their setlists.. or did you mean this by saying lights? sorry for confusing.

anyway. as im going to so many gigs this tour i really hope some variation. if not surprising songs at least these same songs in different order or something! but i dont want to sound like im complaining, cos in the end it doesnt matter, and i want to hear new born every time anyway.
