Just wondering if there are any Muselivers who share an interest in these areas...

yay that's my study . But i had to quit, i'm not very good at programming, Java, C++ and LISP hate me . It was really cool though, especially Robotics, we had to build a robot with Lego Mindstorms. And the psychology stuff you learn is very interesting, Cognitive Psychology was my favourite subject. You first have to know what natural intelligence is and how that works before you can learn anything about artificial intelligence.
But the study only existed since 2002, so the organisation was really bad. Maybe i'll give it another try in a few years.

I used to be in a robotic club, but lost interest after a year.

*revive*

I just got interested in the Artificial intelligence side of this, and I have to say, some of it is very interesting.

Things such as the Turing Test are quite intriguing.

Does anyone know of a website etc, that has up to date news in the development of this science?

Here are a couple of links that you may find useful:

ScienceDaily

Innovations Report

These will provide the freshest research news on AI among other scientific news.

You can try ScienceDirect as well, maybe you'll find something interesting on AI there too.

I love robots. I just finished building a fully autonomous robot at my uni with a few friends for a course. I spent too much time in that bloody lab... but the end was quite worth it.

That's effing ace. Any pics?

What year are you in, by the way? 'Cause here, robotics is learned in third year i.e. fifth semester.

When I hear the word "robot" my ears automatically perk up and I'm all, "Coool!! Robots! " but then I watch movies like I, Robot or A.I. and I'm reminded as to why they freak me out.

There is only one robot that I will allow to take over the human race:

Picture:

There's another picture on my profile.

The idea of the competition was to follow a path to each of the dolls, and pick them up and transport them to a location. Points were awarded if you got a red doll, but deducted if you got a blue doll. Once you completed that, you had to catch a moving target (the small RC object in the left of the picture). The other team was controlling that robot.. which made it really difficult for our autonomous robot to get it. :P

I'm in second year, just finishing my 4th study semester. The other programs in my uni don't offer robotics till 5th/6th semsester.

What kind of robots have you built?

Firstly, the robot is great, I mean if it was able to do all those things, it's not all that easy to build such a robot. Congrats.

Secondly, as I said I don't have robotics till the next semester, and the downside is that I'll have to choose between AI and robotics, because I have only one available slot for a subject/course by my choice, my program being software engineering. The good thing is that there will probably be a robotics competition in November/December that I'll co-organize and I'll be building a robotic arm for that, but I haven't even made sketches for it, I just have a couple of ideas for it. If the main organizers decide to narrow the robots to just autonomous wheeled ones (we're still negotiating the categories), I don't even have the slightest idea what I'm going to build for that, I'll probably just join one of the other teams.

@ Nick: cool robot . I had to do a similar assignment last year, we had to follow a black line and collect golfballs and transport them to a different corner. But we had to use Lego Mindstorms so it was a bit easier than what you've done i think. There's a picture of our robot (Calimero) on my profile. I don't study AI anymore btw, i'm a history student now . Robotics is the only course i really miss.

i think its cool. although its probably going to be a very bad thing if we end up having robots in our homes doing stuff for us. we are probably gonna become more lazier than now. i mean i bet someday all you have to if you have to go (use the bathroom) real bad and cant make it to the bathroom, then you just go on the floor or whatever and the robot will clean it up and super clean the spot so it looks like new and like it was never dirty.

Like Wall-E?

I saw an advert for a program on TV about a woman that lost her eyesight, and had a robotic eye implanted that let her see again.

Bloody incredible. I'm seriously considering studying robotics.

You won't make a mistake in doing so, believe me. It's definitely the future and the field most scientists today want to be in. And the stuff Kevin Warwick is doing is freaking amazing.

Implants fall under biomedical engineering by the way, another great field to be in. Only downside (same as robotics) is that the progress is very slow. The most advanced eye-implant is sub 1 mega pixel, maybe only 16 by 16 pixels. I'm not too sure. The medical understanding of our bodies is still too weak to be applicable in creating prostheses having human level functionality.

Cheers, I appreciate that.

I don't like doing software for robots. I don't mind making algorithms for certain tasks, but its the coding aspect that really turns me away from it. The electrical and mechanical components are much more interesting I think. Are there any chances that you'll be able to take more robotics courses as elective at your university? Also, have you ever used Solidworks? It'll make your design process much much smoother.

You're quite right about the biomedical engineering. Its a really interesting field, but the progress is really slow going. I'm amazed at some of the devices they've been able to make to improve the lives of disabled people. Really fascinating.

I love the philosophical side of it, AI and its consequences. I'm a big sci-fi fan. not crap sci-fi or even kinda like what I call fantasy sci-fi like where everything is like LOTR just space-style. Things like novels by Philip K. Dick and Issac Asimov.

Has anyone seen The Second Renaissance on the Animatrix. I think that is one of the best shorts I have ever seen. Absolutely astonishing.

The philosophical implications are quite interesting, gonna make a thread about something like that in the outweirding section, to discuss it to unlimited lengths.

@Nick: No, just an introduction to robotics, the very basics, we have more subjects related to the software aspect, like pattern recognition, computer vision etc. so the mechanical stuff I have to learn on my own.

Well (*subjectrevivebecauseiwastryingnottoduplicate),

I'm studying to get a major in Computer Science right now.

I am in my first year of college, im taking a course on Java right now.
I already learned JavaScript (don't get it confused with Java. Big Difference) in high school
but so far in Java we have only learned how to create rectangles and circles and color them and print them onto the screen its my first semester of Java.

I cant wait to learn more, i want to be able to create video games and programs and more computer programs that will do amazing things

Anyone fancy building a moon rover/robot, to win the google competition lol.

This is pretty impossible unless you are a multi billionare, but would be great fun to do. Prove to those conspiricy idiots that the Americans did in fact go to the moon, by landing at one of the apollo landing sites as evidence.

Me and a few mates are going to do some concept designs onece we have finished uni in June.
